ILFORD MURDER.?. DEATH SENTENCES ON BOTH PRISONERS.
Dramatic episodes of intense human interest, marked the closing stage of the 1ford murder trial on December 11th After an absence from court of two hours. and a quarter the jury returned to their seats at 6.45 with a verdict of guilty", against Frederick Bywaters and Mrs. Edith Thompson for the murder of her husband. On each, accordingly, Mr. sentence of Justice Shearman passed death. So ended one of the most remark. able trials in the criminal records of the Old Bailey.
With the atmosphere of the densely erowded cours unbearably hot and stuffy. everal women, unable to stand the nerve strain, had to be assisted out of court before the members of the jury resumed their seats. A moment or two later twe knocks on the door by the usher were heard, ar the judge returned to the Bench. All eyes were, fixed on the Evacant dock, and a couple of minutes elapsed before the "prisoners, who ha been taken to the cells when the jury re- tired, were brought buck, Mrs. Thomp , pale and almost fainting, was as sisted by two ward reses to the front. and then collapsed into her seat. Bywat ers also betrayed" signs of the ordeal through which he was passing, but kejt his feelings ander control. As he step- ped forward he shook hands with his solicitor, Mr. Matthews. Then, amid a deathly silence the Clerk of Afraigns asked the usual questions to the foremün of the jury. "How say you," he inquir-" edt "do you find the prisoners Frederick | Bywaters, guilty or not guilty of the murder of Percy Thompson Guilty," came the quick reply. A treiaur of deep emotion passed through the court when, in answer to a similar request in regard to Mrs. Thompson, the foreman repeated in a low voice the same fateful word. The female prisoner, who had been assiste ed to her feet, closed her era, and would have fallen but for the support of the wardresses. The Clerk of Arraigns then, turning to Bywaters, asked him if he had anything to say why judgment should not. be given according to law. In firm voice he replied:
"I say the verdict of the jury is wrong. Edith Thompson, is not "guilty. I amenn murderer: 1 am not an assassin."
Mr. Justice Shearman, having put on the black cap, then passed sentence of death in the usual form.

Mr Thompson, who throughout the terrible ordeal presented an agonising appearance, and had flung bers if back with a gruan, was now assisted to bur fert. and the judge repeated the sunted w of death on her. When the Clerk of Arraigns asked her if she had anything to way why there should be stay of excu- tion of the sentence, she plaintively sob. bed, I am not guilty. Oh God, I not guilty. She then fell into the arms of the wardresses, who carried her qua of the dock. Bywaters stopped calmly down to the cells without assistance. HTELYPH. C, 10 0. afterwards" sent for his counsel, Mr. Cecil Whiteley, to thank him for his efforts on his behalf. It is stated that Mrs. Thompson will appeal against the sentence. Her mother was assisted to a seat in a fainting condition. and Mrs. Bywaters was also deeply effected.
The stages of the trial which preceded the verdict were the finish of Sir Henry Curtis Bennett's, speech in defence of Mrs. Thompson, the Solicitor-General's reply for the Crown, and M Justice Shearman's quietly conversational sum- ming co..
Sir Henry Curtis Bennett, when her ended, had spoken altogether for three and a half hours. The Solicitor-General, heginning hesitantly, picked up the threads of his case with cold: legal, Ingies one might almost ry with impartial logie, so evidently anxiour was he to be fair to the accused. The Judge devoted himself first to the case against Bywaters, and had finished with that before he adjourned for luncheon. It took him about an hour after luncheon to make his comments on the evidence in the case of Mrs. Thompson....
The most "generally interesting of his observations were those on the character of the crime and of the trial. He point ed out that from one point of view the case was short and simple, but from ather points of view complicated. In a strong criticism he objected to the state- ment, which, in spite of that counsel's protest, he ascribed in actual form to Sir Henry Curtis Bennett that "never hefore in the history of crime had there- heen euch an unexampled and unusua) charge. Also he was scornful of the suggestions that this was n "case of great love." Quoting a passage from a letter to which frequent reference had been
nonseuse. made, he called it bluntly " and added, "We must get rid of all that atmosphere.".
Notable, too, in view of the extra ordinary anxiety of some people to he present though to this no direct allusion As made-use the Judge's remarks on the right of the public to come and-bear the proceedings in Courts of Justice. The consequences of this right and its exercise sera that the jury "found them selves surrounded by a very different at mosphere from that which existed in But they ordinary humdrum. cares." must throw that pride." This summing up was well ealculated to clear the case of any false notions of romance which might have been imparted, mis ko
It was a larger crowd than ever that wailed to be admitted to the "court for the final day's proceedings At eight on The previous evening between 300 and 100 people had already collected at the public, entrance to the building-far more than could be possibly, accommodated in tha court. The number included several wo- men, the majority of whom were well dressed. The first fifty people belonged to the unemployed class, hoping to die none of the positions they had secured. During the night, the members of the quene passed away the time by playing cards, singing songs, and discussing the triál.
