DETAILS OF ATTEMPT TO POISON

COMMISSIONER

Bantar recently cabled that a startling official statement was issued by Scotland Yard announcing that it had been definité- ly established that Brigadier General Bir William Horwood, K.C.B., C.B, D80, Commissioner of Police, was suffering from malicious administration of poison. from

Sir William was taken ill whilst dress: ing in his office preparatory to proceeding to the Lord Mayor's Banquet, at the Guildhall, and was taken to hospital, appa rently suffering from severe heart disease. Full details, of the effort to kill Brigadier-General Horwood, states abcable of November 10th, show that two attempte were made through the same means, that of poison, either arsenic or, strychnine, conveyed in boxes of chocolate addressed to General Horwood at Scotland Yard. ·-The first arrived fortnight go through the usual postal channels, and was opened by an assistant, who thought it strange that anyone was sending chocolates to the Chief. There was no name or address inside, and the chocolates appeared to be stale. "Tks assistant handed the chocolates to the C.ED. for enquiries 23 to the origin, but these were unsuccessful. On Thurs day

to the Commissjoner, and wis opened ly the Secretary, Miss Drysdale, who handed them to General: Harwood, who did not know anything about, the first box, and doubtless because the true character of them was not suspected while dressing to go to the Guildhal, General Horwood ute one or two. Miss Drysdale also took one, but not liking it she throw it away. Meanwhile General Horwood was seized with illness, and sank balplessly in a chair, Doctors were called in who imagined it was a heart attack. Farther investigation led to the examination of the chocolates, which were found to be poisoned. No arrests have been made..

Though all the following day was spent by some of the most skilled detectives, supervised by "The Big Four," the crime remains a complete mystery. All that is: known is that the bar boge 'the London post mark. The writing was believed to be disguised.

Late at night the detectives motored to the district, where it was thought there was a clue, but up to the present, with- out result.

General Horwood has šo, far, recovered. to receive visitors, bat he needs rest and; quist. He slept in the afternoon for the first time since his illness,-Giddipes and palpitation were the sickness that seized him.

The Police Surgeon in a statement to the Daily Mail said that he was not at liberty to say what poison was used, but he know what poison it wa

As an explanation of Brigadier ceneral Horwood's readiness to eat the chocolates sout through the post, it instated, according to a wire of November 12th; "that he was expecting such a present, and could not be persuaded to act otherwise,

The Star says that anonymous parcels are constantly being received at Scotland Yard, and treated with every suspicion,
