"FALSE SCIENCE," PSYCHO-ANALYSIS CONDEMNED.

Bir Cuford Alfbust, Regins Professor of Physio na the University of Cambridge, inaugurated the winter session of viba medical school of St. George's Hospital with an address which contained racy re minisomgen of his own student days at the school. He criticised the " so-called paychology and psycho-analysis of the present time, describing the loose uses of these terms de "an eminent instance of false science and of the mischief.at borrowing the terms of science for talk about notions which do not answer to the requirements of science'

Sir Clifford opened with a reference to the time when he was a medical student, In those days, he said, we were far too easy-going. Life was saaier and competi tion was les In medicine especially university graduates were few, and if fairly efficient practices fell to them with out any great effort In the 'fifties' and sixties of the last century nearly all the Oxford and Cambridge men went to St. Georga'a At that time every patient of St. George's had his liquor as a routine; bis 4oz. to doz. of port or sherry-often a good deal more-when in peril of death liberal ration of brandy, and when convalescent his ale. (Laughter.) The cellars of the hospital were full of wines dad brandy by the hogs head, and with ales by the tun. They never heard of anything so vulgar as whisky. (Laugh- ter.) Of the surgeons of his day he could say nothing; physicians and surgeons had then little in common: The unhappy. Crosa-division between medicine and sqr. gery, with its inevitably cramping con ventions handed down with the mediaval contempt of handicraft as menial, had been a blight upon their profession even aatil now. The ground had to be cleared of antiquated systems and forms, as well e of ruins and rubbish. Those who denounced destructive criticism, saying that because it was not constructive is was but a barren strife, were blind to the lessons of history. The old divisions must cense and the specialist must take over entire responsibility for his portion of the body.

"HALF-EDUCATED THINKERS."

"

In regard to the so-called psychology of football and" prize-fights" now occupy- ing society and the newspapers," he pointed out that psychology was a name appertaining to science. The popular psychology of the day," he said, is an minent instance of false science, and of the mischief of borrowing the terms of science for talk about notions which do not answer to the requirements of Iscience, The so-called psycho-analysis had no units, no measureente, no pre- cise definition, and no separation of objective and subjective evidence. To pretend that what these talkers speak of is science is to strain language, and to deceive ourselves. It is one of the min- fortunes of science, as it is of social ad venture, that every new point of view, as soon na revealed but in part, ia mobbed by a crowd of half-educated thinkers. among whom fanatics and imposters find many dupes. Even pickpockets are pow appealing to their judges to regard their CILSO from paychological point of view." (Laughter.) It was the fashion to-day to be analysing everything, said Sir Clifford to forget that science was not concerned with values. This paycho- analysis was no new "thing. For many a century it had been known to the Chur ches, both in theory and practice, and, broadly speaking: beneficent as it might have been and still might he, in parti cular cases on the whole it had been condemned by the honour, good feelings purity, and commonsense of mankind. Yet, after all this experience, it was now proposed to got teachers, and, inciden. tally, doctors, who had the fancy for the job, to probe into the minds of adoles ocats, and even of children, and to do so with dirty tools.

MUSIC-HALL SALARIES.

The news that Billy Merson, the eminen music-hall comedian. had refused an American offer of £1,000 a week to work for a film company turns attention again to the salaries received by music-hall stars. Mr. Moraon is reported to have stated that his present contracts do not bring him half that amount. The only British comedian who is accused of haring made £1,000 a week in this country is Bir Harry Lauder, but that was not in the ordinary way of music-ball business but when running a production of his own and represented both salary and profit. Mr. George Robey is the highest, pair of all music hall performere. here, but is a long way from £1,000 figures. The exacts salaries of stars are difficult to get, for conditions, arrangements, extras and deductions vary in most cases.

Some interesting figures were given by an expert witness in a dispute about music-ball sketches, in which Beatie and Baba, appeared. Mr. Kahn, the uncle of the two girls who wrote the sketches, alleged that they had earned close on £20,000. In this trib it was stated that their salary was £200 a week. That was four years ago, and gr

A couple of years earlier, in another music-hall case before the courts, it was' stated that Little Tich received 2300 week. Mins Hetty King £100 a week, Mr. Horace Goldin, the illusionist, £250 s week; and that George Hõbey received 2120 a week All these contracta were in provincial As sonsthall sela. | ries have advanced in line with every- thing else since the war, it will be seen that the prize inwards of the music-half
