SIR LANDON: RONALD'S ANECDOTES.
Sir Landon Ronald, conductor of the Albert Hall and Fcottish Symphony Orchestras and principal of the Guild- hall School of Music, has put together the anecdotes collected in his successful career in a book, "Variations on a Per sonal Thame."
"Oddly enough, I was a lazy boy and would always shirk work if I could," he says of himself. But then, "Everything in marie came remarkably easily to me especially writing songs."
Melba give him the helping hand to Fame. She was then at Covent Garden, the queen whose lightest word was not to be disregarded, and the young Landon Rosald was a humble coach (repetiteur) and accompanist. Melba was about to leard Maisent's opera "Manon" and Landon Ronald was instructed at short notice to bu her accompanist He did not know the music, but sat up one night from 11.39 till 3.30 at work on it. The next morning, in trepidation, he waited on the prima donna. She put him through his paces and said; Remember that for the future you are Melba's sole accompanist."
"And for something like 14 consecutire years she kept to her word and had no end elso to play for her.
3
Sir Landon Ronald it was who first persuaded singers of the highest rank to make records for the gramophone. Mr. Ben Davies was his first "catch" Mme: Emma Calve, the Carmen, was a difficult, subject. He lured her as far as the door of the gramophone company's offices, and then she refused to go in. In agitation he implored! her to wait at least a moment in the cab. Meanwhile he dashed upstairs and had the chaque for the woman's fee, hastily written out. This he thor faunted in her face. She was won.
"
Patti was reluctant to make records, but at the age of 60 she gare in." All the record-making apparatus had to be installed in her esatle in South Wales.
She sang divinely. We were all quite, overcome. ...When she had finished her first record (Mozart's Voi che sapete" she begged to be allowed to hear it af ence. This meant that the record would be unable to be used afterwards.
"She had never heard her own voice and when the little trumpet gave forth the beautiful tones she went into ecstasies! She threw Lisses into the trumpet and kept on saying, Ah, mon Dieu! main- tecant je comprends pourquoi je suis Patli! Quelle voir! Quelle artiste!"" ("Ah, now I understand why I am Patti. What a voice! What an artist."!)
Sir London cammante: "There is no new. Patti or Melba to-day; and I fear that the reason is, not great voices as be cause the young people will not have the patience to practise roulades, scales, trills, month in, month out, as thoir great predecessors did."
IMPORTANCE OF PERSONAL
APPEARANCES
The Dean of Windsor (Dr. A. Baillie), who has been taking an interest in a health-week campaign at Eton, told an Eton, audience that they could not ignors any question that affected their body, neither its appearance nor its health. Not only through their body, he said, bu. through the expression of their body, people knew them. A man might have a Certain body, and if he was dirty sloven- ly, or careless, he was not doing that body justice. It was absurd to over-estimate the importance of dress and appearance. but it was quite equally wrong to under- estimate it. He would far rather see young people take too much trouble about their appearance than ton little, and still more with the old. When they were young they had other things to make them tron ble about their appearance, things which passed away when they got old. Most of all should they be careful in the expression. of their face. Quo had known. people in- ' finitely kind who had never taken the trou- ble to make themselves express that kind- lineas in their expression towards their neighbours. They could become hard of expression. To some extent expression de- pended upon the character within, but not entirely they could make appearance. Hal they rot known very ugly people it was a real pleasure to look at, because of the expression and personality that shone cut in them? Had they not also know very good-looking people they never want ed to look at again because their faces were empty, vain, conceited, fall of all sorts of things that took all the value out of the ex. pression of the body given to the world r
