THE HONGKONG DAILY

Guests for the Ball began to arrive Boch after nine o'clock and by 9.30 p.m. the halla wire all well filled EE, the Governor (Sir Edward Stubbs) arrived at ten minutes to ten o'clock, a large num- BRILLIANT SCENES AT THE ANNUAL ber of the Committee being assembled to

ressive him, headed by the Chieftain (tha There has begu, in a certain atatesman's Hon. Mr. A G. Stephen). The Pipers historic phrase,

a sort of à var" in than brake forth into a tremendous burst Hongkong this week. On Monday, after of music, entitled, "The Back of Bena hatching their plans for at least six chie," and the company followed their weeks, the Scots of the Colony rose in backs, into the St. George's Hall where, icsurrection at the head of Chinese mer-

Not, it appears, tp defiance of the powers that be, but in open-or at least very general-invitation to the rest of the exiles from Home at present resident in the Colony to come and help Scote to celebrate the birthday of their patron Saint, the genius of their national poet, the quality of their national beverage and all the other things that are theirs (including, of course, most of the leading positions in ilka British community),"

This is only another way of stating that St. Andrew's Ball was held last night, and, is it has been happening ever since 1815, according to a writing on the wall that fet, the eye of the visitor, it becomes a bit of a problem how to tell, freshly, the annual tale of the annual Ball. Perhaps the best way is to begin at the beginning. The very beginning, of course,.

THE OFFICIAL BET.

"The whole assemblage then watched, with as little interest, the dancing of the Lancers, by which the Ball was officially opened

The thistle, emblem of Scotland, twinkled in coloured lighta, whilst in a mirror' appeared the reflection of a portrait of Robert, Burns, flanked by the St. Andrew's Flag and the Standard of Scotland. The staircases were banked on either side by lovely array of flowers and foliage among which eparkled coloured lighta, Blue and white, the colours of St. Andrew's Flag, prédominated everywhate
