SHANGHAI HOTELS' NEW SCHEME.
FLATS AND A PARE
The NC. Daily Naica states:-
The announcement was made on Saturday that the Shanghai Hotels, Ed., have abandoned their scheme of building a new hotel on the site facing the Race Course, and have definitely decided to carry out a new scheme further west. The McBain property, consisting of a magnificent ro sidence and 60 mow of land, with Bab bling Well Road, Gordon Road and Avenue Road for its boundaries, bas been purchased, and plans are in course of preparation for a very ambi- tious scheme. The existing residence will be retained as the nucleus of the new hotel, and two new wings are to be added, in keeping with the handsome style, in which the existing building, has been designed and decorated. It is said that plans of the new hotel will provide for 300 rooms, including a number of suites de luxe, and it is under- stood that the reception, dining and ball rooms will be on a scale which will enable the management to dine and dance 2,000 people in comfort.
In addition to the hotel, it is proposed to erect two blocks of residential fats, one on the western boundary facing Gordon Boad and the, other on the eastern boun- dary, facing a cew road which will be put through from Bubbing, Well Road to Avenue Road. These flats will have from three to five rooms and will be fitted up with the latest modern conveniences.
The feature of the scheme which hus weighed moat with the directors is that the spacious grounds will be an asset of great value from the point of view of both health and comfort. The old scheme provided for buildings ofly on 10 mow of land. The new one gives 20 mow of land for buildings, leaving 40 mow of pleasant park-like! grounds for the use of residents and visitors. Their present character will as far as possible be retained, and features to be added will be provision for al fresco dancing in summer, and an open air swimming bath..
For the service of the hotel and fats, aspecial garage will be built. In addition, land has been acquired on the opposite side of Avenue Road upon which cold-storage cbumbers and an up-to-date laundry are to be built. From every point of view, the new scheme is considered to be superior to the old, and we understand plans a here outlined are definitely in hand. It is also understood that, upon completion of this scheme, the directors propose to rebuild the Astor House Hotel.
PROVINCIAL HIGHWAYS FOR KWANGTUNG. MEANS OF RAISING FUNDS RECOMMENDED.
Tho Canton Times, says :--- The construction of public highways in Kwangtung will be a fact, if the present Lauthorities will have their way.
Director Chang Yow Yen, of the Kwang tung Public Highway Commission, has made plans to reorganize the work star ted several years ago. To assure the Commission of some funds at least to carry out the projected roads, Director Chang has requested the Government. to use all rent proceeds from the public wharf, to reorganize the wine and tax collection methods so as to increase their receipts, to add forty cents surtax to every permit issued by the brothels monopoly, and to set aside all road tax, sixty from each voter in the districts, all exclusively for road construction purpose....
Director Chang will divide the road ennstruction works into four main aad eleven sectional divisions. The four main divisons will have headquarters at Shiubing, Chaochow, Kiungchow, and Yam-Lim. The Punyu, Tsengshing, and Poklo districts will form the first high- way section; Chaoping, Meibsien, and Tapu, second'; Lo, Wan, and Kwei, third; Mou, Dien, Hu, Wu, Li, and San districts, fourth; Hoi, Shui, and Hen districts, fifth; Lung, Wo, Wa, and High districts, sixth; Ho, Tzu, Lin, and Jeun districts, seventh; Kook, Loh, Yang, Yon districts, eighth; and the Ying, Yo, Lin districts, nineth. The other two sections will best Kiungchow.
A WOMAN DIPLOMATIST..
The distinction of being the first woman to enter the United States diplomatic ser- vice belongs to Miss Lucille Atcherson, of Columbus, Ohio, who is recommended to the Senate by President Harding, for sp- pointment se Secretary of Embassy.
Miss Atcherson was engaged in relief work in France for some years. On her return to Amerip recently, she entered for the Diplomatie Service examinations, which she passed with flying colours.
