HOW THE INCAS GUARD THEIE.

HIDDEN' TREASURE...

Mr. O: H. Prodgers, in "Adventures in Bolivia" (Lane, 12s. 6d), gives hair-rais- ing accounts of hia attempt to get the Indians on the Challans River to tap rabber for the company by whom he was employed.

The Indians, realising that white settlers wore likely to be the ruin of their race, had set strict guards on the passes of the river, and defeated all expeditions sent Against them.

יו.

Mr. Prodgers first of all had to reduce his weight of 265 lbs. by a series of hot baths; next he had to secure the friendship of a Spanish sencra, who was in league with the Indians.

He then started out on a stout mule, well upplied with rum and whisky, passing along the edges of precipices, swinging over torrents on a rope, through a land of Alpine flowers and parrots, snukes, monkeys, and jaguars, until eventually be ruched the Indian village of Parome, where he found that he was expected to plead his own cause with the Indians.

He won the day by saying that hoidon and New York had always regarded the Challanas as brave Christians," and "not. savages,

#

Mr. Prodgers made three valiant," but unsuccessful, attempts to discover the Oballo Cuneo treasure from a document which contains these helpful passages :—

If you and a steep hill all covered with dense forest, the top of which is that, with long grass growing, from where you can sec the River Sacaubaja on three sides, you will discover on the top of it " a largo stone shaped like an egg, so big that it took 500 Indians to place it there.

"If you dig down underneath this stone for five yards you will find the roof of a large cave, which it tok 500 men two and

balf years to hollow out. The roof is seventy yards loug, and there are two com partments and a long narrow passage lead- ing from the room. ..". On reaching the door yon must exercise great care in open- ing.

The door is a large iron one, and inside on the right you will find an image made of pure gold three feet high, the eyes of which Bro two large diamonds. This image was placed there for the good of mankind. ...You will find in the first room thirty- seven large heaps of gold," in the second. room a large box and thirty-seven big heaps of gold..

"Great care must be taken on entering these rooms, as enough strong poison to kill a regiment has been laid about."

Five hundred Indians were employed by the Jesuits to bury the treasure, and 288 of them died of fever. Mr. Prodgers was him- self poisoned with strychnine, but cured himself with arsenic, while searching for the treasure.

MATRIMONIAL EXPERIMENT.

A novel experiment in the promotion of matrimony was launched it Paris at the first meeting of the Green Ribbon Club on September 25th (writes the Daily Telegraph's corresponent). Some little time ago a society was formed, "the members of which were urged to signify their willingness to marry by wearing a slip of green ribbon The experience proved that spinsters and bachelors in search of a mate were too shy to wear such an emblem in public, so the Green Bibbon Club was started. This society, which has an entrance fee of 30%. accepts as members girls over 15 years of age and men over 18. It is to arrange dances, tea parties, and picnics for members only, at which all present will wear little aambers and need not reveal their identity. At these functions everyone present will know that every other guest is in search of a suitable partner. Ifa young man makes the acquaintance of a young lady who appeals to his taste he notes her number and then. forwards to the secretary of the clab a form on which are entered all the useful par- ticulars about himself. This form is sent to the girl's parents, and if the preliminaries appear satisfactory" the young man is supplied with similar information concern- ing the lady in question. One rule of the. club is that before taking any further steps after the exchange of forms the aspirant to marriage must submit to the club secretary a certificate of medical examination. The frst meeting of the club was devoted to the drawing up of rules and discussing projects. Its efficacy as a matrimonial agency remains to be tested.
