THE GIRL ATHLETE.
MEDICAL OPINION.
The question whether strenuous athle ties are harmful to girls and young women has been brought into prontinence by the recent successes of English girl athletes on the Continent, where Miss Linos and other British competitors outclassed their Con tinental rivals.
Medical practitioners and the advocates of athletic sports for women agree that, excessen being avoided, clown sport for woman as for ama, is healthy alike for body and mind; and that sport is being taken up enthusiastically by women i proved by the activities of the recently con Rtitute Women's Amateur Athletic Asso. ciation, of which, Major W. B. Marchant and Mrs. S. C. Eliott-Lynn are joint secretaries. In the recent Continental events for woman the British team of four- tees lady athletes acquitted themselves with distinction. They won many of the lealing events, and toppel the score with a 18 against total 4. 30 points America's 34 and France's 29. In conver sation with a representative of the Daily Telegraph, Mr. Eliott-bynn said the competitors had suffered no ill effects us the result of the contests. The Wone's Amateur Athletic Association, lebarred such contests as football matches, tugs-of war, throwing the hammer, and putting the weight if over 1b. Walking and run- ning coutests were limited to half a mile, and hurdles for women were 2ft. Gin. bich us against ftin. Sports for girls and women as defined by the association, added Mrs. Ehott-Lynn, "ean only result in, mental and physical good, and the greatest care is taken in training to en. sure that competitors are it to undertake the work, and are gradually brought up to their form without the possibility of strain or distress." Officials or other ath- letic bodies expressed their approval of the conditions under which the Women's Amateur Athletic Association participa- ted in Continental events, and their con- flence that no danger could arise or over-strenuous tasks be attempted.
A DOCTOR'S VIEW.
Interviewed by a representative of the. Daily Telegraph Dr. Rodas Shaw, of 144, Harley street, said he was particularly interested in sports for girls and women, and could see nothing but good, for mind and dy, in athletic sports properly conducted. Dr. Rodas Staw, who was inedical officer in charge of the Australian Imperial troops in London during the war, explained that, in woman as in man, the same governing prin- ciples applied in relation to strain or over- exertion. In the case of potential mothers, all exercise was good and all sports were

Une essential con-" dition," added Dr. Kodas Sauw, "must be borne in mind, and that is that the girl or young woman must be physically it to take her place with her fellows in her sports and games. We find it necessary to make this statement because our House was, at one time, a user of this bottle.
After long experience we find that it is not a good bottle. It is easily broken, and the sizes fre- quently vary to the detriment of the buyers. We discontinued its the interests of our 130 in Customers.
We sel the same high-class quality Whisky in this bottle. We have ose quality only.

THE CHURCH MARRIAGE
SERVICE..
AMERICAN WOMEN AND THE PROMISE TO OBEY.
A message from Portland, Oregon, says: from the mar. Striking the word "ober ringe ritual of the Protestant Episcopal Church and a muove to substitute grape juice for wine at the eordmunion pervice marked the first day of the convention of the House of Bishops here. Hereafter the bride will not be compelled, to pro- mise to "obey" her husband,

The elimination of the word" obey cansed considerable discussion and in rome cases firm opposition. After the announce ment' of the vote, which was 36 to 27 in favour, the Right Rey, Charles M. Bock- with of Alabama said: "I move some, thing be done to release all women who have already taken the vow to obey."
Bishop Bratton of Mississippi replied that he could sew no reason why the word "obey" should be left out of the ritual. "I stand for the solidarity of the family, And every family must have 'n head. The Christian family must have a bed, yet it must be a partnership.
"The grape juice petition came from the diocese of Los Angeles in a grape grow. ing state. It asked that grape juice should be substituted for wine in the com- munion service or "that its use be per- mitted by clergymen to whom the subject of prohibition had become a matter of conscience."
