MIXTURE OF SEX IN ANIMALS.
Addressing the British Association, at Hull, on September 13th, Mr. Julian Harley described further progress he is making in the study of the metamorphosis at tadpoles into their adult forms. The thyroid gland is now known to be the chief physiological agent in inducing, the change. from the embryonic to the adult form. He pointed out that other factors influence the sequence of oveats. The tadpoles of tailed amphibians when kept at low tem peratures grow to a greater sira than those kept at more suitable temparatures, so that it was clear that the cold retarded the development of the thyroid gland and was, on the whole, favourable to the factors which influenced general growth, . The change from tadpole to adult was an example sucessivé dimorphism-that was to say, of the two phases in which en individual might appear, coming one after the other.
Sexual dimorphism, the division of animals int: males and females, was an instance of simultaneous dimorphism, one or other of the two types having to appear." But at sometimes happened that sexual dimorphism was successive, the one type passing into the other.
Dr. F. AE. Crew said that a mixture of the male and female characters was quito commau in domesticated animals. Many cases in the horse, pig, gost, and in cattle had been examined and showed characters 10 similar that the condition might be re- ferred to a common cause. The cause he suggested followed the line of thought to which "Mr. Ansley had referred. In the development of sex the gonads, or us-ential exual organs, were the first to appear, and then, under the direction of the hormone, or internal secretion: liberated by them, the remaining structures of the body were, modelled on one of two plans, the male and the female. But if the first structure were delayed so that the hormone was not pro- duced, then the factors stimulating general growth ruled and the development of the. secondary characters procceded on a plan intermediate between the sexes. Later, when the hormone did appear, it could exercise it's influence only on structures which were not too full grown to respond to it. A form of the organs that was full grown, but not differentiated generally, rasembried female structures more closely than male, so that intermediate or intersciual individuals were generally set down as females whatever their true sex might be.
