PARIS FASHION NOTES.

[FROM OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT,

ISABEL RAMBAT.]

PARIS, August 14th. New models for autumn and winter wear are being launched with amazing rapidity. After visiting a dozen or more collections of clothes produced by some of the leading drass-designers of Paris, one can truthfully say that the general impression is pleasing. The silhouette is still slim, except in the case of robes de style; there is a good deal of soft drapery; and dress on the whole is much more picturesque without being in the least fantastic.

The influence of a bygone age is making itsolt decidedly felt in many houses. Models reminiscent of 18th Century art are carried out in beautiful colours. The old Greek school has called forth many artistic studies in soft draperies which are so becom- ing to a full figure.

The Ventelian ball, held on the ere of the Grand Prix, heralded a lean- ing towards old Italian fashions, The scenic effect on the great Opéra stair- case was one never to be forgotten. The women were all so picturesquely attired in their sweeping pannier dresses and soft fold. ing Longhi dominos of lace, falling orer the shoulders. This style has, of course, been modified for dresses prepared for ordinary occasions, but the les is still there, and where it is not unggosted in line it is brought forward in the colours.

The Pope's cute, or something very much like it, finishes of any dresses at the throat. Sometimes it is depicted in purple, at others in cardinal red, or green of an ecclesiastical abade, with a button and cord for its fastening. Fine and rare lace forms ather

soft full evening dresses, but, whatever the gown, it takes on a strict sort of air that gives it a stately appearance.

The Grecian form of dress a soft youthful style, something that speaks music and daneing. The silk crepes which are so popular just now are perfect for flowing drapers in a light or dark shade they are equally good, and whether the draperies are straight or circular, they are becoming and are kind enough to hide from view arany imperfections in one's figure.

The Princess robe, has come back again. Not the stiff, erect style worn by Queen Alexandra when she was a girl, but a softer imitation that has no bones in it, and is made of bright and glowing materials. Une dressmaker has a model de- signed on these lines, in black and silvor brocade, with a long pointed bodica fastened to a full gathered skirt which nearly touches the ground. At another house there is a charmingly girlish dress, cut on the sama principle but made in a soft material It is also in black, but the back is relieved by puffed borders of cream corduroy velvet. A little circular cape han "been designed to go with this dress, which is lined with the same cream velvet- It only needs a poke bonnet dr little tight-fiting hat to make one juntɲ back to the last century.

Where one model of picturéeque beauty is designed, there are twenty that have been made to meet the needs of the busy woman who wants clothes that are not only easy. to put on bat are easy to wear. The three- piece costume is one of the most practical" garments for every day wear that was ever invented. As a coat and skirt it looks trim and neat out of doors, yet meets all. the requirements of a house froek. Velvet is being used extensively for these suits, in black, navy blue, or brown, with a guy little bodice, attached to the skirt, in some bright coloured silk or satin. Wool crêpe is a delightful material for making the little coat-frack that is worn without a jacket or cape for walking. There are some dainty models with a long slim line that are made of two different materials. A check or plaid is buriered with a broad band of plain cloth; & cloth with a pattern woven on it has pipings of a plain material, or strips of it arranged diagonally up and down, to give it a tailored appearance.

The house-dress pure and simple is under- going a complete change in regard to its Construction. Many of the new dresses in this category have skirts that are made on the umbrella principle. They flute and they float, like the sails of a boat, yet no wires are hidden away inside them. It is just the way in which they are cut that gives them such a full appearance. Another scheme is to arrange the skirt in broad box pleats, so that it opens wide with any jarticular movement. This style is to he recommended because the skirt keeps flat in the ordinary way, and takes up very Kittle room in packing.

An amusing skirt to have at hand is the akirt that ties on like an apron. It can be attached, or detached, just as the wearer foals inclined, and will trim any plam chemise frock she may happen to hars in her wardrobe. It is made in lacs, it is made in pleated silk, or is sometimes even made in velvet, but in the latter case it is better when it consists of broad loose pakels rather than if it le cut all in one, as it hangs better from the deep waist-belt.

As far as trimmings go this autuma fur seems to be one of the most popular notions: It is used upon satin as well as cloth, and is quite as much scen on a full evening dress as "on a aporte coat. In one collection nearly every other dress had a touch of for somewhere about it, no matter for what occasion the dress was intended. It was made up into bows to trim an evening dress of lace, it formed the aash of a dress in velrét, and on costume and walking frocks it provided a straight stand-up collar and gauntlet cuffs.
