Treasury Chambers 22. February 1849

With reference to the Subject of your Letter of the 4th December last, I have it in command to acquaint you, for the information of Earl Grey, that the Lords Commissioners of Her Majesty's Treasury concur in the sanction recommended by his Lordship for the Expenditure reported in the Despatch from the Governor of Hong Kong dated the 22nd September last to have been incurred for providing the Widow and child of the late Inspector of Police Smithers with a Passage to this country; and I am further to state that adverting to the peculiar circumstances of the case, and to the usual Practice in regard to Widows of Persons in the Police or other analogous Establishments in this country losing their Lives while on Duty, My Lords are further prepared to assent to the Grant to Mrs. Smithers of an Allowance at the Rate of Twenty Pounds per Annum to be payable from the Revenues of Hong Kong so long as she shall remain a Widow.

Herman Merivale

I am,

Sir,

your obedient Servant
