A MILLIONAIRE'S ROMANCE;
GIFTS BY THE LATE MR. WINANS
SEPTEMBER 5TH, 1922
THE SECRET OF YOUTH.
THE COUÊ METHOD. *.
A medical man, writing in a home paper says 2-**
A remarkable romance of the deceased millionaire-sportsman, Mr. Walter Winans, was revealed in a King's Bench, action Thy youthful appearance of a womany last month when the administrator of his patient of mine is the cause of endless dis. citate sought to recover from Mrcussion among ber friends. Graham Lycett and his wife living at Bexhill £125,000 detained" from the deccased by alleged fraudulent misrepre-
sentation.
Counsel for the plaintiff said Mr. Wi. nana, after being separated from his wife, met in 1900 at Ashford and became attached to the female defendant, who was aged eighteen and was then Mr: Wainwright. "A curate, named Lycett, came to Ashford and became the friend of the Wainwrights. Mrs. Wainwright was divorced in 1914, misconduct with a man unknown being alleged.
After the detree had been made absolute she represented to Mr. Winans that she was unmarried and destitute. Mr. Winans made her large presents, including $40,000 in Consols. £16,000 in Rusian Bonds, £5,000 in War Loan and bills of un cuor- mous umoont, totalling altogether £125,00
Counsel emphasised there was no an gestion that she was Mr. Winans mistress or that the money was given foran in moral purpose. He led the husbure! hal been nade co-defendant because he was legally liable for his wife's torts.
The defendants" denied that any mis- representations had been made.
When the exse war continued on July 20th in the King's Bench, after Counsel had given detalls of the bills rup up by Mes. Exrett, he said the late Mr. Wins idolised her and regarded her as the one good woman he had ever known, although he knew that she had been divorced. Then the crash came when he'discovered that sho bad married Lycett 20 days after the derve was nude absolute. Mr. Winans tried to avoid further liability, but writs were showered on him.
At this stage, the parties conferred and a settlement was announced. ·
Mrs. Lycett's Counsel said it was impos- sible for him to give the real facts without Baying many things unfortunate and unde- sirable in the interests of everybody. If the case" hal proceeded he would" have made it "abundantly clear that misrepre- sentation was impossible.
Her general health is not good, so that health as a factor has no bearing on her case at any rate.
Her own explanation of the mystery of her good, looks is that they are entirely due to the performanãs of a certain ritual night and morning.
Gazing into a mirror, she banishes ail frowns, reduces her face to a placid state,. and smooths away with her hands any signs of wrinkles
She makes no attempt at ordinary face massage.. Finally, addressing her own "refèction, she says, "Isn't it wonderful how young you are looking?! I cannot understand it."
She believes that she is looking younger every day, and certainly her appearanes is the busy of her woman friends and the admiration of her daughters.
her sub-conscious mind receives constant To me the explanation seems to be that
induced to discharge into the blood cer- doses of such a nature that the glands are
in substances which inhibit old age.
Now it has berg shown that if a cat be. annoyed, or its emotions excited, a sub- stance becomes present in the blood which causes high blood pressure.
This latter condition is associated with old age.
It is universally known that worry and annoyance produce grey haira and other factors inseparable from old age.
"A frown is indicative of either internal or external worry. That is to say, tho organism has received an unpleasant, stimulus either from within or without,
If it be true that old age is the result of stimulation to certair glands, may not the converse be also true-namely, that cer- tain glanda may be harmoniously attuned Iso that their effect will be to prevent old
age, if not to encourage youthfulness.
