In the House of Commons, replying after a discussion on the Near. East, in the course of which the Government were urged to effect af immediate Turco-Greek settlement, Mr. Lloyd George said that he welcomed the discussion because the Government had nothing to conceal, and desired, above all things, a just and faire peace which was likely to endure. The. situation was presented to the House in some quarters as that of a friendly Tur key, alienated by the policy of His Majesty's Government, but that showed forgetfulness of the history of the past eight years when we were engaged in a deadly struggle, when the Dardanelles, Borphorus, and free access to the Black. Sea were vital to us. This friendly power 'siapmed the gates of the Dardanelles in the face of the two countries without whose continuous assistance the Turkish Empire would not have been in existence, in 1914 We had fought one grent war to preserve Turkey from extinction, and con- stantly intervened to protect her from attack, while in 1974 the whole nower oë this country was mobilised to Save Turkey.

Mr. Lloyd George declared that deplor able atrocities had been committed by Greck soldiers in the war region, but they were nothing in comparison with the Tur- kish calm and deliberate extermination) of tens of thousands of men, women and children, in tranquil territory without & war, rebellion, or other provocation.

Supposing the Armenians controlled Asia Minor. continued Mr. Lloyd George, and had committed these atroci- ties, we would be bound to intervene in the same way, because there was no ques- tion of a Mahomedan pence that placed hundreds of thousands of helpless people at the mercy of those who were guilty of deportations and outrages without some guarantee. Mr. Lloyd George declared that it was a mistake of Turkey to take the attitude that if she held out long enough she might get all she wanted, while a worse alternative would be the renewal of the offer of the Paris terms.
The Prime Minister referred to the offer mado to Turkey in 1917 to get out of the war, which was rejected until Turkey was completely beaten and had added scores of millions to our debts and tens of thou sands to our casualties.
