CLOTHES ON A LINER.“. "ADVICE TO LADY TRAVELLERS,
A bot cily wind on the Indian Ocean: lifo on deck, sheltered from sun, but in fult view of publicity; dock games during the day, dance at night-how a look decent under melting conditiona? This is the problem that confronts the woman travelling in the tropics.
It is hardly necessary to say that the very young woman or girl scores heavily, and next to her the woman who travels with a msid. For a grod, maji can wave her mistress from most of the incou. venience of life on a ship. For instances, owing to the absence of leng mirrors it is impossible to see the hang of # NOWO areu in the small glass provided, wher it is rough it is difficult to catch sight of the back of one's head and when hot, the electric fan blows one's hair
about while one is brushing it. Further, and above all, owing to the confined space of lockers and cupboards, and the cone- quent necessity of keeping clothes in trunks, dresses and blouses are liable to be crushed and require ironing.
To combat all these disadvantages1- maid is nu inestimable boon, and the happy woman who owns this treasure is recogniz able almost at sight. But, maid or no maid, it is remarkable that there are so few arrangements to assist the pleasing ap- pearance of a lady passenger when so imich consideration is shown for her amusement, Perimps the absence of any provision for ironing is the chief of these: Most women would gladly pay a small fee for the use of abin with a table and electric irons if the shipping company did not see their way to providing them gratis.
Always to look fresh and mol; that is the ideal; and this ideal.can be achieved without great effort by simple means. A clean cotton gown made of a material with atripes or cheeks on a white "ground with a low neck short loose sleeves, worn with white stockings and buckskin or CILAVER shoes, cannot be bettered. Dresses for gunes must not be too murrow. Many people still hold to the blouse or jumper and skirt för gamer, because the blouse can be of fine muslin or voile and easily changed. Even the untransparent gingham, drill or apongo cloth is sometimes too heavy, and one be gine the day dressed in cotuon voile, crepe, muslin, or fonlard. Of these, voiles aru the coolest; they do not cling, und in na allover pattern, however pale, do not soil nor appear too transparent. Nothing is" prettier than the new finely embroidered designs: But they are more liable to crush than crepes-either of these two Baterials, or foulard, are more becom- ing to the older woman than zephyr or gingham.
With regard to hate: the soft white felt with a medium brim is comfortable and almost universal for the young, but the elderly woman may not risk one of these. At most she can allow herself a grey or fawa felt hat, trimmed with a ban of chamois leather: hut seat shady straws d chinizes to tone with her costume should' be her choice. A topee is necessary for every outfit, and can be purchased in greater variety in Port Said than in London. Never graceful, it cau be greatly improved by ninon scarf draped over the crown and hanging down, as a puggarce behind. But many women do not care to wear a hat all day, and, indeed; when lying on a deck chair it is decidedly more comfortable not to wear one-then difficulties begin Flying tendrils of hair and loose curls are all very well for the young girl or the pretty little bride: but what if the bair is wispy, even inclined to grey sad there is beside a hint of middle 1208 about the face ?..........
Neatness about the head is essential and more necessary as years advance, and various solutions present themselves. A ninon asarf in a becoming colour tied tur- bau fashion, a veil drawn over the hend, a broad ribbon band, even that much-abused abombination the hair net, this is the choice offered to the traveller whoas coiffure is not naturally smooth or compact. The ideal of looking cool depends largely on colour. Not all women realize how much most men like greys and delicate tones.
At night every one in glad to change. into the semi-evening dress that is chiefly word; but on darce nights, which are frequent, we see ball gowns of, all sorts, and when it is hot one cannot help feeling that the less there is of the garment the better. But wise people will bring their oldar gowns, freshened indeed, but not ton good for the hard wear on a ship which every gown has to offer. But smart shoes and stockings and a variety of hair-bands- for evening to "unate the gowns ure: essential
Life on a crowded ship is far more public than life in any hotel. Sharing a cabin with a stranger, meeting Triends en route for the bathroom, sleeping or waking, at play or at work, there is no privacy. Our secret soul is revealed in cur body; lot 118, at least, try and clothe that gross portion of ourselves with that refinement and, restraint which corresponds to the discipline and self-control of our moral delves.Time.
"This paragraph is written," says the London Morning Post," with the know ledge it will only be fully appreciated by those who enjoy the privilege of being over forty years of age: The last few years: of the life of an old lady were brightened by the companionship of a cuuary which sang beautifully, and was always cheer- ful and active. She named it Sankey because it was not moody.”
