A new form of confidenes trick, spm- bined with sleight-of-hand, has been played' an East-end cloth merchant ia the Commercial-road area in London by two clever rogues, who have gained over £1,700, in a fortaight, the latest victim, having lost £1,000.

The story starts in a publichouse in Aldgate, where two smartly dressed, men mentioned that they had a large quantity of very fine silks to sell. A third man ofered to find thein alioyer, and in troduced the merchant who was ultimately victimized.

Coming out of gaol he wrote his life story for an American paper, and the money he thus obtained brought him back to Europe quite recently. But fraud sosmed second nature to him, and he was constantly in trouble. His last effort to make money was a pitifal little trick with a choque, which caused him to be taken to prison. In the cell of this prison he died suddenly of heart failure..

At a further meeting, however, the two swindlers professed to be highly indignant becaus the samples had, they pretended, been tam pered with, and they even declared that the deal was off. Eventually, however, they agreed to sell him the silk for a round £1,000, but when he offered them a cheque they seized on the alleged, tamporing with the samples is an excuse to demand notes.
