YOKOHAMA AND TOKYO FOREIGN BOARD OF TRADE, DISQUIETING BUSINESS, OUTLOOK
ANNUAL MEETING,
The annual general meeting of the Yokohami and Tokyo Foreign Board of Trade was held at the Board's office on Thursday, May 25th. Mr. I. Bickart (Chairman of the Board) who presided, reports the Japan Chronicle, in reviewing the trade of the year said that it was to be expected that 101, following a year of general collapse, should have shown poor results; but it was, on the whole, not so bad as had bera anticipated. The volume of business, was sumiller; but there were generally fewer clains on ac count of exports, and better deliveries of imports.

But if we endeavour to form an opinion to the future, I tear the outlook must be considered "as disquieting. In most countries considerable declines in values bave occurred, and wages have been drastically et in the majority of cases: bat in "Japan the exact contrary has_bong sein-wages in many insanda ara higher than ever, and no declining tendency can be bserved in the cost of living, while the goods produced are generally of unsatisfactory
quality. Labour conditions tend to become chaotic, and there" appears to be no settled system under which workmen can be discharged; the workers are getting things much as they wish, w strikes are called for the purpose of intimidating employers and exacting the must preposterous levius.
