PSYCHOLOGY OF AN INDIAN
MOB.
[BY SIX PERCIVAL PHILLIPS
MADRAS
Cowardice is the chief characteristic of an Indian mob. 1 have seen something of the Hadrassi is revolt, and their tacties whon opposed to the forces representing British authority are the samo sa those which characterised the rioting in Bombay two months ago.
It is a deeply humiliating spectacle to watch a horde of brown-skinned, spindle- legged, Bat-chested Indians atoning British troops, and gyrating and gee ticulating around them in a European street with shrill cries of abase, the men in khaki standing patiently under a shower of bricks and pebbles, trying not to wince or show pain when these well-aimed missiles struck their bare legs or faces.
There can be no finer example of discipline than this. The Leinsters, who endure auch | au ordeal within view of Gerernment House, where their Prince was staying, are as proud and inely tempered soldiers as you will find anywhere in the Empire. None would be quicker to avango an insult, Tet because of "order" they bore this shame.
ГАЛЬНЕ
You have seen a pack of yelping curs trying to gather courage for an attack, yet fearful of the slightest move on the part of their victim ?
The comparison came instantly to mind
I watched the mob edge nearer and Bearer, with a wary eye on the grim figuren they were assailing. A sudden gesture of pain by a bruised Leinster sent them back several feet, so feurful were they of a swift attack. Then, reassured, they would press. en'again with greater determination. They mistook-as natives always do-the lack of retaliation as a sign of fear.
The cravea spirit of the rabble made the Leinsters groan. That beings walking up- right on two legs should show such a eraven, spirit filled them with unutterable
disgust. A hul beside me, who was mechanically wiping the blood from a cut on his knee, said, half of himself: "For hirin's sako show a little pluck" And the thin, brown forms danced madly in the sun- light, waving bits of cloth in both hands above their heads and baring their teeth like dogs at bay.

THEY CRI.
Later, when the Leinsters were let loose. with rifle butts as the only weapon of persuasion for the clearance of the streets the ristora fled wheneverta soldier even leaned in their direction. Not a single sign of resistance, or of trucu lence. Low salaams from cornered mobs- men, and even prostrations at the feet of scornful soldiers. The Leinstera did their work with restraint, and no attempt at revenge.
"The trouble with this scum is that they never stand up to you," an old sergeant said to me as we watched the panicstricken Bight of a crowd before two swearing.. European officers of police brandishing the usual sticks.
They snarl at you, and if you take them by their rags they become a bit of putty. If you ignore them, they try to bite you if you shake them they ry."- Daily Express.
