OUR LONDON LETTER. HOME POLITICS IN A STATE OF FERMENT.
THE COMMUNIST CAT OUT OF THE BAG
(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)
LONDON, March 30th.
MARLBOROUGH HOUSE.
There have been numerous paragraphs in the London newspapera during the last week or two to the effect that the Prince of Wales. will soon take up his abode at Marlborgh House; but from inquiries,"I learn that no such arrangement is in contemplation. The news is coupled with some talk of a specul ative charter that His Royal Highness may soon enter the Holy Estate of Matri mony. There is always a lot of ill-informed gossip on the subject, but it may be some time before any marriage takes place. In the meantime, Queen Alexandra, who likes living at Marlborough House, will remain there, with occasional visits to Sandringham by way of a change. York House, the pre- sent domicile of the Prince of Wales when he is not filling the role of Ambassular of Empire abroad, is quite sufficient for bi needs, as it was for those of the King and Queen as Duke and Duchess of York ang their four elder children.
THE COSTLY LESSON.
The financial year which ends in the present week will pass generally unregretted. In many instances the weight of war burdens have made it oppressive; but ita, history was rendered more mëlancholy than it need have been by the large scale object- lesson of what Labour extremists would do with the community if they had unfettered control of national affairs," The coal strike was the dominating fact in the industrial record of the period in question. The mad hatters of the Unions thought they could use "the pool" as a device for making the taxpayera provide a per manent subsidy for the colliery workers through the maintenance of State control of the mines and the pressure they believed that system would enable them to exert on the Government.
We'all recollect the result. The mode. rate Labour leaders were forced to toe the Fine or lose their positions in the Upions, Next, the Triple Alliance was proved to he asColossus with feet of clay. In every direction workers were thrust into unemployment by tens of thousands. The trade of the whole country suffered a stag- gering blow. Mines were closed down. Some will never be opened again.. There are numerous cases where minera have been left to contemplate the mockery of bosies which they had bought tear the place where they earned their livelihood, and these little houses starling useless and unsaleable because the closing of the adjoining pits have! proved permanent.
are
From the point of view of its promoters the strike was a complete fiasto. As an example of crude tolly it stands nusur passed; and us the financial year ends on March 31st the appropriate question, to ask is whether Labour has learned the lesson? The coming months will provide the answer.
THE COMMUNISTS' WAY.
I hear that a speaker at the meeting of the Communist Party held in London et the cat out of the bag" with regard to their rew-found affection for the Labour Party, camoufaget under the phrase, “the United Front" "Speaking on a motion in favour of affiliation, this priceless delegate said, "The question of affiliation to the Labour Party is really one of using the out ward form of working class unity, presented" by that body, as a vehicle for influencing in revolutionary direction both the fact and the mode of expression of the workers' class struggle." The resolution was carried. So that's that t
