MYSTERIOUS LONDON CRIME,

OLD LADY MURDERED, WHILE ASLEEP.

A mesage to the Indian papers dated March 14th, states :---

The Daily Mail declares that Scotland Yard is completely baffled by one of the mdat mysterious and startling crimes of modern times. Laly White, a sweet, | silver-haind elderly lady, widow of Sir Ed- ward White, a former Chairman of the London County Council, was found lying in her bed in a London hotel in the morn ing. She had been murderously attacked during sleep, and a ghastly wound inflicted on her hand, while allsage bruise was found on her left hand. A sharp heary imple ment protably a hatchet, bad eridently been used. The doctors hara declared that she is beyond human aid and death is only a matter of hours.

Robbery is apparently not the motive for her watch and some jewellery lay on the dressing table. The furaiture was in its usual place and the bed clothes were unlis- turbed. Revenge is discounted because, the. old buddy had no enemies. She had returned to her bed room, which was on the first floor, at the conclusion of a bridge party. She was then in good spirits.

She was discovered by her maid, who was pulling up the blinds in the room and who ran out screaming for assistance. A police | cordon was drawn round the hotel which was minutely searched without result. The ab- sence of motive is hampering investigations It is supposed that the assailant bid in the coal cellar during the day and emerged at night. When he had committed the crime be evidently walked out by the front door, which was found unlatched. Th porter neither we nor beapl unything.

A further message three days later

states —

The mystery of the murder of Laly White remains ás profound an ever. Å theory, already reported, was advanced only to be scrapped owing to the impos sibility of discovering a motive.

A quartette of the most brilliant Scot. land Yard detectives known as the Big Four are working day and night without the slightest result. The inquest opened today, but, at the police' request, it was adjourned. A wealth of evidence was given, bat none of it threw a single ray || of light on the mystery. An opinion is gaining groun that Lady White was Awakened and recognised the intruder, who, woeing he was known, decided to Eili her. The flood of recent outrages has profoundly stirred the country to ilemand the carrying out of more adequate protee tions. In broad daylight, Earl's Court to-day was disturbed by rubbers, who brutally attacked an octogenarian woman and left her bleeding and unconscious.

Later: The hotel pantry boy was charged to-day with the murder of Lady White-
