The four or five Government coast- guard vease of the Philippines whith, owing to retrenchment policy, are at present tid ap, are to be disposed of on condition that they are t taken away from the Philippines, but are is the con-twise trade employed.
The Governor-General of the Philip. pines last week bad a conference with the Insular Customs Collector for the purpose of discussing present shipping conditions in the islands and the possible ways for lightening the cost of ships' operation. According to the chief excou tive, it is important that these conditions should be improved in order to promote inter-island trade, and business condi tions and agriculture in general through- out the islands.

The quartely returns, of Lloyd's Regis ter, recently published, reveal the large extent to which the trade depression has affected the British shipping and ship- building, industries. They show a reduc tion of 184 vessels and 515,000 tons compared with 120, and the total amount of shipping now under construction in the United Kingdom 2.-N. Y. K.
