SCOTTISH LETTER.

EX-PREMIER AS LABOUR CANDIDATE MR. ANDREW FISHER AND

KILMARNOCK.

[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] "

EDINBURGH, February 22nd. The Right Hon. Andrew Fisher, ex- Labour Premier of Australia, is not to be coutent with a life of inactivity. Th Laubour Party in Kilmarnock has adopted him as their candidate at the next General Election, and it is understood that he will accept the invitation. The great im. porta Ber of this event to the British | Labourists cannot be overestimated. Mr. Fishor has a knowledge of affairs and cf. the machinery of Government which would be invaluable. It will be remembered that Mr. Fiber was born in Kilmarnock, and after working there as miner, emigrated to Australia in 1887. This step was taken, it is asserted, because his advance views made it dificult for him to obtain employment in Ayrshire. It will be interesting to note the afect of the entry of this vigorous personality into home polities. "His views on urinaments and the position of coloured peoples are not quite in line with those of the Labour leaders in this country. And in addition everyone will watch with curiosity the reception which Kilmarnock will accord to its illustrious son. Mr.

Fisher's decison, it has not yet been publicly announced, will be one of the piquant incidents of the election campaign.

It was typical of Brown's high sense of duty that when a movement was set on foot to have him transferred to a sphere of service where his intellectual powers would have been employed without risk to his valuable life, he refused to accept such intervention, and gladly give his "life" for his country's sake. They made Edinburgh the laughing stock of all utilitarian municipa. lities who preferred the electric to the wire rope. But even now there are alternatives to the iron posts in the middle of the street which are necessary to carry the wires. There are the conduit or underground system by which London has preserved the beauty of the Embankment, the motor bus preferred by Oxford; or a detour of the tram lines round by George Street, So- great is the diversity of opinion that a Government Departmental enquiry will be held before the disfiguring posts are sanctioned.
