There is genuine regret in the House of Commons that Sir Eric Geddes bas decided to give up his membership. He will go down to posterity as the man who wielded the economy "ae" after the Great War, In the course of a long experience Of all the "business" men brought into the Government during the stress of the world London crowds and State ceremonies of struggle he has been the most promincut one kind or another I am bound to say and the most successful. With a little that I connot recall anything like this more practice he would bare become a tolerable debatar. But politics was not Royal wedding which bar aroused his forte. As a business man he wanted much sincere and spontaneous good-will and pleasure. I is, due in pari to the delightfully buman and universal feeling of happiness at the marriage of the King's daughter, but there is the feeling, also, of profound respect and admiration for the Throne. There was nothing in this marriage which suggested an "alliance" with the foreigner, with diplomatist and politicians in the background. For once the artificiality which surrounds Royalty was discarded, and the public saw in the radiant bride on her wedding morning a typically English girl, who was marrying the Man of Ler choice,

The vastly important question of the education of Chinese students in this conuiry continues to hang fire from one case or another. Last year there was & glimmer of hope that those chiefly interested in the subject would be in a position to report progress. Then came the Washington Conference, and the absence from London of influential personages whose advice or nasistance was considered essential. Since then the plaintive cry for economy has risen in strength till it has become tornado of sound, nad it is in present circumstances practically hopeless to expect financial help from the Treaury. Money is, after all, the crux of the problem, for with out substantial aid from the national ex- chequer little or nothing can be accom-

papers representing the extreme Conser vative point of view are almost joyous that the Irish elections have been postponed. The decision seeins to give them cause to think their most gloomy predictions will be realised, and that open war will break out aguin. As against ibis we have the papers that affect to believe that everything is in order, for with this school of political thought everything is for the best in the best of all possible worlds-especially the Irish world outside the Orange zone. But what the plain Englishman sees is the possibility of the De Valera faction gaining in power and strength the longer the appeal to the Irish electorate is delayed, as there is always the chance that in the end the Republicans will secure a majority, and presod to flout the Treaty whiel De Valera bas never rightfully accepted...
PROOF OF GOOD FAITH.
The British Government, as all the world concodes, treated the Irish with extrem generosity in the mutter of the Treaty and the selling up of the Free State. Proof of good-will and confidence was shown by the prompt arrangements made for the oracua- tion of the British Army in Ireland. It ir regrettable, to say the least, that the Irish leaders have not seen fit to emulate this ezsuple of trustfulness in the plighted world.

The delay in setting up a stable Govern-3 ment in Dublin is something that this country did not bargain for; it prolongs the period of unsettlement, and allows time 43 and opportunity for the extreme elements to intimidate the moderate section of Irish opinion on which the hopes of the country Fri ultimately depend. Every day brings har rowing stories of outrage and sheer ter Batar rorism by methods that are peculiarly Sjun Fein. No wonder there is anxiety on this 8
