NEW CHURCH LEOTIŪNARY. APOCRYPHA SUNDAY LESSONS.

At a meeting of the House of Unity, held at the Church House, on February 8th, under the presidency of Lord Par moor, the revised tables of Lessons Measure, 1991," recommended by the Prayer Book Revision Committee, was considered. The measure lays it dawn that:

On and after November 27th, 1921, the Tables of Lessons contained in the Schedule to the Metsur may be follow ed at the discretion of the Minister in lion of the Table of Proper Lessons and the Table of Daily F. and Second Lespous contained in the second part of the Schedule to the Prayer Book (Tables of Leasons) Act, 1971, and thereby directed to be printed and pub- "lished in the Book of Common Prayer

of the Church of England."

The schedule referred to contains the tables of lessons appended to the first report of the Frayer Book Revision Com- mittee, such tables of lessons for Sunday services including selections from the Apocrypha to be used as alternative les- sons at the discretion of the minister. This proposal has aroused considerable opposition, and numerous amendments had been tabled.

Bir Edward Clarke moved to insert sa А пот Rubric at the hand of the table of icssons the words:

One pela is provided both for

Sunday on which a lesson

from the

Matting and Evensong one such lesson "shall always bo read.

He said this amendment had for its abject the restoration of a rale at one time laid down by Convocation, but it was now proposed to leave it to the dis cretion of the incumbent to decide whe ther on a particular Sanday he shall not |rend one lesson at least from the 'Gospels.

He was the it would produce very great. difficulty between the incumbent and the parochal council if there were uncertainty as to whether a lesson from the Gospels was to be read on a particular Sünday.

Lord Hugh Creil expressed the hope that the House would not interfere with, the decision which the committee care to on this point. It might be found inconveni- ent to have a rigid rule that there should be one lesson from the Gospels. Be thought it would be better to maintain the general policy of the lectionary, "and not to restrict the incumbent,

Mr. T. WH. Inskip, M.P., ani Prof. Beresford Pile supported the amendment, which was carried.

Sir Edward Clarke then proposed as an amendment to the schedule to leave out Ecclesiasticus xv., 11 to end ds an alterna- | tive evening first lesson for Sexagesima Sunday. He said that since 1784 the Bible Society had issued millions of Bibles, and in not one of them k a line from the Apocrypha appears." Shame?"!

Lord Philimore:

Sir Edward Clarke: What! Shame on Christian mer who wish to keep their Bible pure!

The introduction of these lessons, Sir E. Clarke added, would inevitably cause friction and dissatisfaction in almost every parish in the land. He had read the lessons regularly on Sunday in Church for a good many years, but nothing would ever induce him to read a lesson from the Apocrypha, and he would resent the rend

MOL. 27 ing of any such lesson in any church with which he was connected. It was a very serious thing to throw quother element of The 28 m difference between the incumbent and the parishioners by introducing something Wed 28m quite unnecessary. What were they going

in the Churches? Many of these Bibles contained nothing from the Apocrypha, (** Shame ! '') He hoped the House of Laity would take a firm stand on this Sat Jan.

matter.

Mr. G. A. King seconded the amend ment

Mr. G.. A. Bryson hoped the amendment would not be accepted He claimed that the Apocrypha was part of the complete Bible. When King Edward VII was crowned the Law Officers of the Crowa decided that a complete, Bible was neces sary for the ceremony, and one containing the Apocrypha had to be procured.

Mrs Tristram supported the amend- ment because the Sunday reading lesson was the one bit of Bible that a certain proption of people who attended Church got in the week

Afra. Creighton pointed out that some of the most revered and learned men in the Church had given this matter considera-

tion.

Afr. Buckmaster asked the House to core down, from the malms of sentiment to the ordinary affairs of human life Be took it that they were there as pious and saber members of the Church of England, and that Church stated clearly and em phatically that the books which they knew as the Apocrypha were to be read "for example of life and instruction of man-

деля.

Mr. T., A. Vardham declared that the Apocrypha had been tried and found wanting from the fact that the number of feasons taken from it had, been reduced. He asked what would a number of lads make of the Story of Susanna

Lord Phillimore said Sir Edward Clarke was pot up to date, and had overlooked the fact that the Apocrypha was in the Bibles of Luther and the Swedish Church. The

Church laid it down that those boots should be read for example of life and instruction of manors. If they were not to be read to young people, what about the story of Lot and his daughters1 He declared that oxcept in the Book of Isaiah there was nothing in the Old Testament to compare with some of the early chapters of the Book of Wisdom.

Lord Hugh Cecil supported the schedule. The matter, he said, was very elaborately weighed, with the result of including parts of these books as alternative lessons. On tlie general question, surely they should be guided by the formularies of the Church.

On the motion being: pat to the vote the amendment was lost by 102 votes to 66,

In view of this decision certain other amendments to exclude lessons from the Apocrypha, were withdrawn. S

An amendment, moved by Mr. Insläp to the effect that the discretion of the Finoumbent with regard to the Lectionary should be subject to the approval of the Parochial Campoil was lost,
