Encl: No. 1 in Deep: No. 98

Despatch No. 150. In it to bail Grey.

Sew avoids all mention of the head- and hand of Senhor Amaral, which:

he still persists in

keeping

in his

possession.

I do not deem it necessary to trouble Your Lordship with the perusal

of the Commissioner's reply,

with

the Council's rejoinder, which is a very lengthy document, in which all the arguments already stated, are

reiterated, and which concludes in

protesting against the acts of the Commissioner, holding him responsible for the assassination of Governor Amaral, for the detention of his head and hand, for the violations of the rights of Her Majesty and the Portuguese nation; and lastly,

for all consequences whatsoever that may result as well from that act as

from the unqualified proceedings of the Chinese authorities of Canton, with regard to it.

I have,

(Signed) S.G. Bonham,

To the

Colonial Secretary.
