Every

wise woman

LOOKS UPON MOTHER SEIGEL'S SYRUP AS HER BEST FRIEND!

"

Nearly every woman has her "bad days"-days when she is tor- tured by splitting headaches, when she is irritable and nervous, Or bilious and dizzy, when she feels heavy and listless, or s0 dispirited that only " a good cry" will save her from a breakdown. Whenever you feel like that, be assured that your stomach and liver are out of order. They have lost tone and strength, and are there- fore unable to do their work thoroughly and efficiently. Head- aches, bilious attacks, constipation, nervousness, languor and low spirits are usually caused by stomach and liver disorders and are banished and prevented by the herbal tonic, Mother Seigel's Syrup. Rid yourself a headaches, biliousness, constipation, flatulence, acidity; and keep yourself fit and well by taking the herbal remedy. MOTHER

THE REY, H. D. ‘A. MAJOR'S OXFORD SERMON.

The Rev. H. D. A. Major, Principal of Hipon Hall: Oxford, against whom allegations of heresy have been made by the Rev. C. E

a priest in the diocese of Southwark, preached the Assiza sermon at the Church of St. Mary the Virgin

Oxford, the University Church;

op January 15th, in response to an invita tiou front the Vice-Chancellor of he Uni- versity,

Mr. Major based his address on the text, Yet once more I shake not the earth only but the bcarens

Lisa (Epistle to the Hebrows). He said that the history of religion know much of those shakings of the heavens, for they had heralded the

the great advances in religious evolution of mankind. Like the writer of the Epistle to the Hebrows, we in this generation knew something of such a ahaking, for a notable one, had accurred in our own times. Candid ex- amination would show that many of the doctrines which John Keblo in 1843, his auditors and contemporaries, regarded as essential to the human faith have then been so andly shaken that hardly any cut- tured Englishmen could believe them to- day. A new science, a new history, a new psychology, had been the agents in that shaking, but the vera causa was the creative spirit of God.

The effect of this shaking” said Mr. Major, has been to make some people very sick and very sad. Others it has alarmed and infuriated: Others it has Eled with hope. Seme afirmed that as the result of this shaking of the heavene it is evident that there is no longer

pricats, supported by sapient magistrates. Others, forgetting that human protests, however loud or well-intentioned, have Fittle effect on the shaking of the and do nothing to stop the abaki aaserted with atrident reiteration that the beavens have not been shaken, and denounced as heretics and revolution- aries those who maintain that they have been. Others, again, though by no means a large company, remembered that Christ has predicted the shaking of the powers that are in the heavens as one of the

signs of the coming of the Son of Man, the coming of the Kingdom of God; and that he has bidden His dis- ciples not to be terrified

unintellige OT in the face of such a crisis, but to up their heads in the hope and expecta tion of coming triumph. These last have striven to understand the significance of the shaking and feel that the whole future influence of the Church for good depends on the removal of the things that are shaken, and the present situx- tion is this: the things that have been shaken-shaken so severely that they have been shaken out of the hearte

and minds of modern, educated Englishmen -still remain in our Church's formul- aries in our Prayer-book, in our hymn books, and also, owing to their training, in the minds of many of our clergy."

We saw the result, continued Mr. Major, unmistakably in the emptiness, of our Churches, the decline in the number of baptisms and confirmations, the de- cline in the number of children in our Sunday schools. We were startled some years ago by the religious census taken in Londen, but it was unquestionable that were a similar census taken to-day the figures would be far more genen tional. And if we locked at the people who remained in our churches, they did not as a whole represent the more. telligent and vital elements in our com- munity. Another reault was the serious decline in the numbers of ordinands, for which the fundamental reason, was the Church by her failure to remove the things that are shaken was unfortunately giving an impression to young men such as was found in the student Christian movement, and, he believed, equally in the upper forms of our public schools, that she is bopelessly out of date and unpleasantly indifferent to the claims cf truth and reality Those who did not know that things were shaken and in consequence live in a fool's

or paddle little boats in ROY

backwaters might take holy orders, and some, he was sure," sought ordination knowing precisely what the situation was, and did so only in the hope that they might assist in the removal of the things that were shaken.

in

It was common knowledge, said Mr. Major, that missionary progress India was at a standstill among the educated classes of that land. Nor was that surprising, One who had held an infinential position in the educational world of the East had said that Chris- tianity seemed to educated Indians to be

a twilight religion."

The momentous question at thie time." concluded the preacher,

on the answer, to which I believe the fate of the English Church, and, as I think, also the fate of the English nation depends, is this:"Are the great mass of the educat ed English laity through

disgust, through sinth, through indifierence, through moral cowardice, through un willingness to sacrifice some of tho energy and money which they devoto sport and politics, going to allow the English Church to become so burdened with the impediment of the past that the must become an incffective obscurastist? geet will they strive, by wise organ. ization and self-encrificing service to the Church, to redeem it for the English- nation and the Kingdom of God through- out the world1. If they will so strive to redeem the Church, their work will most certainly redeem them."

Punch mys: "It is rumoured that a firm of publishers. in order to fill a gap į in journalism, which at present caters' so largely for the pictorial amusement of in-i fants lind the sizurance of grown-ups, "has decided to "start a paper that shall be devoted to news and topical comments. It is proposed to call it a newspaper. This daring enterprias will be closely watched."
