None appears to have existed when Mr. Montgomery Martin gave charge of the Treasury to Mr. Mercer in July 1845, I have every reason to believe that the £32.8.2. referred to, were first discovered in the manner stated in Mr. Mercer's letter No. 148 of the 26th instant, a copy of which, with its enclosures is herewith forwarded for Your Lordship's information, and I trust that the explanation of the Colonial Treasurer will prove satisfactory both as regards the manner in which the surplus was first brought to light, and the reason for its not having been noticed at an earlier period by the respective Boards of Survey who examined and reported upon the state of the Treasure Chest.
In conclusion, I beg to observe that in future greater care and attention will be given to the periodical Surveys of the Treasure Chest, which will effectually prevent any surplus remaining unaccounted for.
