MARRIAGE BY CAPTURE.
A writer in the Japan Times and Mail under the peudonym of "Autolycus," Bays:-
Marriage by capture is about as old) as mankind, and its symbolic survivals aro numerous enough to shock the perfect prudities of modern society. In Japan. there seems to be nothing left to shock, for there is a well developed actual mar riage by capture which still exista and is practiced in Oda Gori, Bitchu Provinces, in the vicinity of the town of Kamajima.
As always, when a young man looks upon a young woman and finds her good in his night, he sighs for her, but in Kamajims he does not need to sgh for her loog. This ceremony is extremely interesting to the student of symbolism.
