MILLIONS LOST IN SHIPPING
,"
SLUMP.
“THE WORST FOR 30 YEARS,”
Millions of pounds have been lost in the heavily-capitalised Welsh shipping industry a Cardiff, message points out and this is typical of the struggle through which practically every industry has been struggling There has been record coal trade
bub in South Wales American competition has now been successfully overcome by selling the total output a serious loss at against which the U.S. exporters could prices not contend. As regards shipbuilding: an Evening News representative was in formed that 90 persent, of British build" ing and repairing firms are without any orders for the New Year. The old year is bequeathing a legacy of trouble to ship bailders and it is feared that January will witness a fresh series of discharges in the shipyards of the north,
"Fully 6 per cent. of the shipbuild- log and ship repairing firms are withous any new orders for the New Year," said a leading shipbuilder to The Brening Feros.
As the work in hand is nearing com- plotion many more must be added to the ranks of the unemployed in the New Year. Already the shipbuilding industry has the highest percentage of unemploy ment 34.5 of the insured trades. While the reduction in railway rates will be added our informaat, “it
of
some help, think that it will be l
would be
of immediate benefit in influencing orders. The trouble is that the present costs of production are about 100-per cent over market values even with the substantial reductions that have been obtained in raw materials Steel for in- stance has fallen from E27 10 to £10 per ton and there have beer big reduc tions in wages. The cost of production in shipbuilding at the present time is from about 16 to £17 10s. per whereas market values are only, about 28 per ton for a typeal cargo ship and cargo ships are the back-bone of the in- dustry. Export opinion, therefore is that the worst days of the slump in the shipyards are act ovor."
tod
When the year opened the official price of Welsh team coal was 90s a ton but there was an abundance of orders (writes a Cardiff correspondent). The drawback is that the present selling price is several shillings below the cost During the period of Government con of production. trol the demand of the Labour extremists caused concessions to be made to them which ultimately proved beyond the capacity the industry could support. Undoubtedly the industry at this period was making large profits but rightly or wrongly the bulk of these profits was swallowed up by the Government, so that when control was finally, removed Ins March the Welsh colliery companies dis covered that their financial resourtes were inadequate to meet current needs.
The most severe blow which the Welsh coal trade received during the present year was the great strike which lated through the months of April, May and June. This enabled the Americans to get in, and for a period they held the Euro pean markets by making contracts which covered many months in advance.
AMERICANS BEATEN.
Later the Amaricans were beaten out: of this preserve of the Welsh coal trade, and during November last South Wales exported nearly two million tons. For
a long time after the war, however the Americans held a hold on the European market, and as recently as October 1920, they exported five million tons to Europe. In October the Egure had fallen to 160,000 tons while at the present time American cool exports to Europe have fallen to vanishing point.
This industrial victory has only been achieved at great sacrifice and it is under stood that Welsh coal is being, and has been sold at a very serious loss for some with the result that quito

companies are not expected to p158 their next dividond. Welsh coal has fallen in price to such an extent that the Ameri- cans simply cannot compete.
Of course the Welsh miners' wages have also fällen away sadly and there is no doubt that they are suffering real privation at the present time, Bo numerous are the orders on the books of the colliery, com pany"now, however, that even more coal could be exported if the various docks JA South Wales were capable of coping with the rush of trade. Que of the com mercial tragedies of South Wales during the past year has been the collapse of several shipping companies. The public, bave lost millions of money in share capital. Moreover the end of these trage dies has not yet been reached.
THE JAIGHT SLUMP. " The price of steamers in the early. part of 1920 reached as high a figure as 230 a top. Recently ships have been sold as low as just ovor £1. "ton. Freights are certain to go even lower, but there is likely to be a concurrent reduc tion in working costs. From the ship- ping shareholders' point of view it is a pathetic fact that freights are now relatively lower than they were in 1914. The various metal industries in South Wales bave also suffered severely from the general sump and there has been a great deal of unemployment. However, nearly 60 per cent of the Welsh tinplate milla are now working as compared with 40 per cent. two months ago.
