ORIGIN OF IDEAS, SIR J. FRAZER'S LECTURE.
Every seat was taken in the Richelieu Amphitheatre at the Sorbonne, ind every Win erammed with standing gangway lasteners, for Bir James Frazer's lecture, ehtitled "L'Etude des origines humaines on December 5th. H. Appell, the Rector of the University of Paris, presided.
Sir James Frazer, who spoke in French, devoted himself rather to the human mind than to the human body, declaring that for the study of the origins of the human mind there were three sources of information: children, remains of pre bistoric man, and savages who can be studied living.
The answer to the argument that to study living savages is not the same as to study our prehistorio ancestors lay, said the lecturer, in the theory of evolu tion, though that did not mean that liv- ing savages would follow the same path as our civilization and some day produca The their Shakespeares and Molières. most interesting pars of the lecture was Sir James Frazer's examination of the question whether ideas, arts, and institu tions have a single or a multiple origin- that is to my, whether they spring from single brain or simultaneously from many brains. He mentioned the simult aneous discovery of the theory of the Newton and differential calculus by Liebnitz, and the work upon the theory of evolution carried out by Darwin and Wallace, each without knowledge of the other's work, and he suggested the prob ability that the use of fire was not a sudden discovery of one individual, but that it was discovered independently in many different parts of the world.

The physical training class for business and professional mea, organised by the College of Ambulance gave a display of physical drill at Mortimer Hall, Mortimer Street, W., recently, in the presence of Sir James Cantlic. Greybeaded veterans went through a series of simple exercises with a precision which would have done, credit to many a younger man, and if one or two of the stouter ones found some difficulty in touching toes, they made very good attempts. The exercises were carried through to the accompaniment of a piano, and the rhythmical movements catching that Sir James Cantlie could not resist the temptation to join in,

Addressing the class afterwards, Sr. James Cantlio emphasised the fact that a muscular arm was necessary to drive a quil and a big muscular chest did not nexssarily imply, what was of more in portance, a big lung capacity. He had a lot to say on the subject of braces The old-fashioned separate braces, such as were worn by the humblest messenger boy, he said, were far to be preferred to the joined braces. Besides. being more hygienic and allowing freer play for the lungs, the single brace, he said, had the advantage that it could be quickly taken off with one hand and used to bind an - jured arm or leg. The Germans before the war were trained to use their bracks in this way, and if our soldiers had been taught to do the same hundreds of their sands of lives might have been saved." As it was, they were not provided with any means of arresting hemorrhage.
