The toast of the Savage Club was pro- posed by Mr. Justice Eve, who said that in celebrating it: 84th anniversary the Savage Club had apparently attained same age as himself fact that ought: not to be advertised,, lest tome disap pointed litigant should allege that mental decay had alrendy set in. (Laughter.) The advantage of being of the same age was that it promoted unani- mity of opinion as to the destination of one's country and the world generally and as to the and degeneracy of the young men of today. · (Läughter.) ·

MAYOR ELECTED IN A BELFRY,
WORLD
The quaint ceremony of making a mayor in a belfry took place on December 6th in the tower of Brightlingsen Parish Church, when Mr. Thomas Bartleti Howard was re-elected to the office, which carries with it that of a Deputy to the Cinque Porte. Six jurats or assistants to the deputy were also elected, cach paying a "fine" of four shillings, and awearing that they would be "aiding to the liberty of Brightlingset," and would punish and reform unruly and disorderly persons, so that good order and quiet might be ratified. It was mentioned that in 1401 the town of Sandwich had a claim on Brightlingsea as a
limb of the shilings yearly, but the deputy stated Cinque Ports, for the "payment of ten
red by the Statute of Limitations. Not that this 500-year-old claim was bar withstanding the remark that it wa "best to lot, sleeping dogs lie,' it was resolved to make the payment annually: without prejudice.
