Professor Roy Chapman Andrews, i Head of the American Scientific Expedia tion, has published the following account of an experience which the members of the Expedition recently had with the Tachun of Shensi, generally known as "the" Christian General" Feng Yu hsiang:-

Upon our return to Sianfu wa made.a enll of politeness upon Fung Yu-hsiang, Tuchun of Sheasi, as we had already done upon the Commissioner of Foreign Affairs. The Tuchun took the opportunity to be grossly insulting, particularly to Capt, Collins, because he is a British subject.

Since this is the only time that I ever have met discourtesy at the hands of Chinese official in any part of the coun- try. I had intended to overlook the matter, but Genera: Feng has within the last few weeks published three more or less misleading accounts of our interview, one, of which was sent to a foreign news paper..

Since the Tuchu has taken at upon himself to give publicity to the matter, I feel that it is only fair to Capt. Collins und myself to publish the facts as to what actually did happen. Knowledge of the state of affairs may be benefit to travellers and sporting expeditions, espe cially, those of British nationality who have occasion to travel in Shendi Pro

"Why do you British help the Japan 250 ""7 Captain Collins replied that British support was given to the Japanese because there was a British bronzy with Japan and that the Japanese had given Great Britain material assistance during the war. THE DIRECTORY covers the whole of th ports and cities of the Far East, from Nether- lands India to Siberis in which Europeans reside.

Commenting on the foregoing incident,

Not only is the Directory as full and completi in each case as it can be made, but each Colony, the same Tientsin journal observes.

A GRO99 AFFRONT TO CAPTAIN COLLINS.

At this point a soldier brought in some walaute which, with other refreshments, were placed upon a table. The Tuchun took some walnuts in hand and passed The Tuchon complains that when Capt. them to me, saying: "I give these to you Collins and I first passed through Sianfu because you are an American, and be we did not call upon him and that we cause I like Americans, I do not give any British." had no permission to enter the province.to Captain Collins because he

Thus the officials were aware of our presence in the city.

At that time. Tuchun" Feng was ruch occupied with military operation against the troops of a certain General Chiang and we felt that he would not care to be bothered, with a visit from two foreigners since there was no par ticular reason for us to call upon him.

After our return from the Tai Pai Shan we were most courteously received by the Commissioner of Foreign Affairs who immediately returned our call and interested himself in our collections and offered to assist us in every possible way.

CALL ON TUCHEN.

The next day, we called, by appoint ment, on General Feng in his tent on the ald Manchu parade ground within the city, aimply to present our compliments and because we had been informed that the Tuchun undoubtedly would be in- terested in hearing of our trip. He had been represented to us as broad-minded and well-disposed towards fofeigners, "

We told the Tuchun of our visit to the Tai Pei Shan and of the scientific nature of our work At his request we showed him our passports and permita for carrying arms, as well as a special letter from the American Legation re questing assistance to be given us."

As I have remarked before, it was not my wish to give this disagreeable incident publicity because of the uniform courtesy which I have received from all Chinese officials with whom I have hitherto come in contract. Since General Feng, entirely on his own initiative, has continued to publish mistealing reports of our inter view, I feel that the time has come to state our side of the case.

He talked to us exactly as though we' were two brigands who had been caught in the act of robbing and as though we could consider ourselves very fortunate in not losing our heads on the spot.
