HAKONE MARU.
The new N.Y.K. liner Hakone-mary is due in from the North to-day on hor maiden voyage to England.
The launching of the new vessel, which is for passenger
and freight service, took place at the Nagasaki Works of the Misau Bishi Shipbuilding Co. on July 25th inst. She is intended for the Company's Euro. pean service and resembles the Sun Mfs and Fushims Moru in many res pects, except that a number of improve. ments have been made faaccommodation and equipment. She has been built under the supervision of the surveyors of "Lloyd's Register of Shipping, by which She is she has been classed as 100 A1. also built to meet the requirements of the Japanese Department of Communications and is in the first class of the Japaneso regiatry.

In addition to being a superb passenger liner, the Hakone Maru has excellent facilities for handling cargo. Her load- ing capacity will be. 10.800 tons dead- weight. The lifting appliances near the passenger quarters are specially designed so as to minimize noise

SHIPPING NOTES.
Messrs. W. S. Bailey & Co., Ltd., Foy loon, have recently completed a steel single-scrow sea-going tug, 93 feet in length. for Batavia. The vessel is of the Rescue Typo" intended for heavy tow- ing, and is fitted for salvage work. The of compound surface condensing engines propelling machinery consists of one set of 350 horse-power using stenta at 130 1bs. pressure and giving a speed of 10 knots. The vessel is of high-class work- manship, fitted with electric light, and is work in the specially adapted for tropics.
