CORRESPONDENCE

THE BRITISH LEGION,

TO THE EDITOR, ON:** THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESK"],

Sta.While it is gratifying to note the support that has been given to my pro test as to the ali-embracing nature of the local Legion. I should be sorry if my action srece construed as an attempt to start campaign of recrimination against all those in the Colony who are not qualified to wear service ribbons. It is as absurd to class every volunteer as dud and washout" as it is fatuous to maintain that every man who went to France was a hero,

#

The only point at issue is that the Legion is intended to perpetuate & com. radeship that existed on the battlefields,. and unless its membership is confined to those who saw active service it completely fails in its object. The fact that the committeo are not composed entirely of pukka ex-service men naturally make it. difficult, if not impossible, for them to deny membership to all and sundry.

OF GOVERNMENT SERVANTS.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS."']

My sole point is that it is bad finance, in view of several other compating claims on our revenue and the falling revenue. on Opium, to spend several hundred thou sand dollars a year in the provision al an expensive and unnecessarily large type of house for Government Servants.

One or two correspondents have recom SIR-As I had no right of reply in the mended resigning from the Legion as & Debate yesterday, I should like to explain protest, but I wish to point out that there that I did not intend to suggest that is a simpler remedy than that.Accord-Government Servanta were overpaid. ing to the Rules and Regulations, the annual meeting takes place in December of each year when the Committee come up for re-election" and an opportunity is given us for bringing forward, resolu tions. It is clear from the feeling ex- pressed in the press that there unanimity among ex-service men nsto the need for more restricted membership being enforced. Let us then turn up at the meeting in strength and let those who have been holding alsof join now to support us in securing it. Then, maybe, those who have not seen active service will gracefully retire and form a social club of their own.-Yours, etc.............

As an instance of extravagance, I may point out that the original proposal of the Government for housing Government Servants on the "Homestead" worked out, including Architects com mission, at an average of 83,000 dollars per house or flat, and even included the scrapping of the present Government Pavilions, which have at least 20 years' of useful

wear in them yet. Yours faithfully,..

I am in the service of a very large British firm which has a very small Euro- pean staff in Hongkong and we are un- lucky enough to number only two ex fighting meu in our ranks. Neither of us has joined the British Legion or has any intention of doing so, as it exists at present, but for what it is worth we raise a combined vaco to add our mite to the general feeling of Hongkong

THE ABOLITION OF WAR.

[TO THE EDITOR OF "THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS."]

Sie,-I write as one who does not believe in the inevitability of war, but who regards it as a transient evil which utimately, will be overcome not by political means, but rather by the devo tion of the energy of mankind to all that pertains to the growth of civilization Not merely by the limitation of arma- ments will strife be eradicated for if two countries have provoked each ether to the degree that would bring them to a State of war it is certain that the condition of their armament, controlled by agreement, will not deter them from fighting.

iternoon, and charged with conspiring and combining together fraudulently to acquire by demands and threats the sum of $350 from Chan Ng."

Lam, the first defendant, came from hospitat to the Court and was allowed to sit during the lengthy hearing. He was employed by the Imports and Exports Department as a shroff. It was alleged "go-between " to that he noted as a obtain for several others from the com plainant the payment of a gambling debt amounting to $350. Both he and the

second defendant requested Chan Ng on various occasions to pay the money, threatening him, in the event of failure, with banishment, or, in the alternative, with being shot.

From the evidence it appeared that a dinner party was arranged for the 14th and 15th of last month at the Kam Ling Hotel, the host on the being a Chiness named Pung, who hailed from Canton. The party gambled on both occasions, and on the second night the complainant lost heavily. Ho accused the others of cheating. A row ensued and severa of the party were injured in the fracas. The visitor from Canton and the complainant reported the matter! to the palice, and in due course a police trap was laid and the defendants were: charged as above:

At a subsequent meeting at the Foo Loong Tea House, 330 were paid over, the police supplying for this purpose notes bearing the stamp of the Central Police Station, They also sent out Chinese detectives disguised who waited in the basement of the tea house whilst The complainant banded over the money, the transaction was taking place upstairs." which was to cover his face," to the first defendant in the presence of the second defondant, Both men were arrest- ed on the spot.

Mr.G. NOrme, after listening to the evi- defice of the two defendants, decided that the charge could not stand, stating that such a transaction was not an offence against the law. The two defendants were discharged.
