THE SUN CURE NATURAL MIRACLES OF LEYSIN. [BY THE OBSERVER'S,' MEDICAL CORRESPONDENT:]
In Great Britain some ten to twelve thousand deaths every year are caused by -called surgical tuberculosis. The pain, minary, poverty, deformity, ugliness, and (By General Request) inafficiency are beyond calculation. The thing would swamp our general hospitala if they tried to admit all cases needing belp. On other occasions the modes of infection, usually through milk in early life, have been discussed, but it was noted that infection is not all, for infectibility or immunity must be reckoned with also. Here a few notes as to treatment.

Our present methods, essentially surgi cal, are pitifully inadequate id every respect. For the most part, they consist in ampatations, excisions of joints, and so forth. For tuberculosis within the cranium and the abdomen, and for Pott's disease, where the bacillus attacks the backbone, the knife is impotent, and, in
eet, we use nothing else.
ན་
In 1913, at the International Medios) Congress, Dr. Rollier of Leysin, in Swit zerland, read a paper on another method, which he had then been practising for ten years. He had about twenty persons to bear him and see his cinema Gims; and Tone of them, he thinks, was English. In ID14 ha published his book, “La Cure de Soleil, but the war withdrew attention
from it.
I have just spent a day with him, visie ing a few of the thirty or more cliniques at Leysin where he is now treating about a thousand patients, sont to him from all parts of the world. Nearly all the cases are murgical tuberculosis. In general, they are grave, advanced cases, which have been treated-or, we now see, mal- treated elsewhere for years. Many of the "pottiques." for instance, are admit ted with entire paralysis of the lower limbe, etc., due to the collapse of the spinal column by the tuberculous destruc- itéon of the vertebræi and "to the conse
quent pressure on the spinal cord. borrible, lingering, malodorous, cruel death is the customary prospect for such patients. After reading the book, now seven years old, I now 'report on the work as it is to-day...
Leysin is some 1,700 feet high, and sheltered from the north wind. The air is usually dry and cool. There is a good deal of sunlight, though little compared with, say, California. Dr. Rollier puts his patients into the light, and it does the rest. They get well before your eyes. How the sun acts, he does not know, nor does anyone else. The skin, practically the whole surface of which receives the light-baths, pigments to a most surpris ing and amusing degree, and there is some parallelism between the pigmenta tion and the recovery, but physiologists would say that this pigmentation is pro- tective against the ultra-violet rayi which, we believe, are overtheless the effective agents of the cure. Or, possibly, the pigment transforms those rays, whose penetrative power is slight, into rays of longer wave-length, which may penetrate deeply, and which are experimentally. asserted. according to recent work, to bo bactericidal. But, for myself, I have neither read nor heard anything that seems to me to explain the results ob tained.

The modus operandi does not matter for our present purpose. Practically nothing is known of this glorious work in our country. The facts have neither been seen by us at Leysin or elsewhere, nor read about. We go on in the old way, exactly as when i anw my first operation on surgical tuberculosis o quatter of a century ago. Compared: with this, Binsen's use of light to cure lupus, for which he received the Nobel Prize, is a tráile not worth mentioning. Leysin is that the sun should be used as For the real meaning of what we see at aprophylactic; for prevention instead of cure.
