boilers; and shortly afterwards an accident occurred in the engines, which detained the ships upwards of five hours. Under these circumstances I did not conceive myself justified in prolonging the absence of this ship from Hongkong, and I accordingly determined to rejoin without loss of time.

A List of Piracical Junks taken and destroyed by the boats of Her Majesty's Steam vessel "Medea", on the 8th of September, 1849.

The bow and stern chasers of these junks were long 18-pounders; the other guns were 12-pounders. There were, besides, a great number of Gingalls on board each, and immense quantities of powder and shot laying about the Decks.
