boilers; and shortly afterwards an accident occurred in the engines, which detained the ships upwards of five hours. Under these circumstances I did not conceive myself justified in prolonging the absence of this ship from Hongkong, and I accordingly determined to rejoin without loss of time.

A List of Piracical Junks taken and destroyed by the boats of Her Majesty's Steam vessel "Medea", on the 8th of September, 1849.

Junk 150 8 40The bow and stern chasers of these junks were long 18-pounders; the other guns were 12-pounders. There were, besides, a great number of Gingalls on board each, and immense quantities of powder and shot laying about the Decks.
