In

.

consideration of the anasiduous efforts and sacrifies which the Nippon Yusen Kaisha made in attaining its presont position as member of the Calcutta Freight Conference, a position which the company won at the outbreak of the World war, the challenge by the Osaka Shoeen Kaisha as a rival for the Calcutta service may provoke resistance on the part of the Nippon Yasen Kaisha and consequent counter-measures against the rival company. Although application

of the Osaka Sheen Kaisha for member- ship of the Calcatta Freight Conference is yet unanswered, the attitude of the British India Steamship Company and the Indo-China

p Company may be imagined

other importan shippers in Calcutta. those who are con nected with the Nippon Yusen Kaisha are the Mitsui Bussan Kaisha, Suzuki Company, Senda Shokai, Andrew! and „Batashi.” And as the Mitsui Buskan is on more intimate terms with the British- India Steamship Company, while the Suzuki Company has facilitated ship- ments by the Kokusni Kisen Knisha, the success of the Osaka Shosen Kaisha on the Calcutta line is regarded dependent on the attitude of Seada Shokai and
