Plenipotentiary to the French Republics.

I am in receipt of Your Excellency's letter of the 16th of the 8th moon, (2nd October) in which you express a hope that I will order the local authorities to give up the head and hand of the Soitinguose Commandant Amaral, as arranged in my letter of the 17th Septr with the whole of its contents. I have made myself acquainted with the reference of the Commandant to the murder of Amaral, the Chinese local authorities tried him and executed him, and sent down an officer with the head and hand which had been recovered.

They had in the first instance no intention of interposing any obstacle, or making the said matter one of barter.

The Portuguese, on the other hand, were aware that when the head and
