FIRST GRAMOPHONE RECORD SIR EDWARD ELGAR ON ́ ́ST. DUNSTAN'S HARP."
Sir Edward Elgar O.M. recently opened the new premises of the Grame phone Company, Limited at 363-7, Oxford: Street, W. Mr. Alfred Clark, managing. director, presided. and in addition to Sir Edward Elgar there were, present at the perammony Sir Alexander Mackenzie, Bir Hugh Allen, Hr. Landon Renald, Mr. Geoffrey Bhaw, and Mr. Francis Barrow.
Mr Alfred Clark said that it was "25 years age since the first gramophone was made in this country. It was then little more than a scientific toy, but it had quickly taken its place in the world of music, and no year had passed without seeing some distinct improvement in its artistic rendering of music. In future years the gramophone would be consider. ed to have had as great an effect on the dissemination of musical knowledge as the printing press had on literature.
Sir Edward Elgar said that it was an encouraging sign to see an imposing building like that devoted to art. The days were gone by when they looked on the gramophone as a toy. It had now taken its place in the artistic world and many serious musicians recognized its enormous value to the composers who wanted listeners. He believed it was cor- rect that St. Dunstan had made the first gramophoïs. record, for it was reported that he had played what was probably a Gregorian chant on his harp and that afterwards "the harp had repeated it. (Laughter.). In the old days record- making was a free and easy and a "scratch" entertainment. (Laughter.) Now recording had become an artistic thing and under the new system they really knew with a good deal of certainty what was going to happen. For pur- poses of instruction it was possible to but forward the finest records that, bad Lever been known. They' waited to create
listeners.
In music the amateur always wanted to do something himself. A man admir. ed a fine picture, but did not sitempt to paint. When it came to music the amateur was so anxious to do something deadly that he eclipsed everything that had gone before him. The gramophone in this respect could do good in that it could educate listeners who were really. able to appreciate the music which they heard. They would thus get an entirely new public listening to music and under. standing it in a way that could not be. learnt through books on harmony.
During the war he sent a number of Mozart records to a friend' in France. His friend's section was bombarded and driven back, and the men had to fly for their lives. When they re-formed he found that one man had rescued the gramophone and another had gone back. to retrieve the Mozart records. They preferred to save them to anything else.
Sir Edward Elgar appealed to the Press to instruct the British public that certificates given for want of skill by bogus institutions were worthless, and that they would be doing much more good with the money which they spent on exhibition of those certificates if they equipped a national opera or did a thou sard other things that would be useful in the musical world. He would like to see a gramophone and a suitable selection of records in every school and great teaching institution in the country.
CHICKS WHO KNEW THEIR
MOTHER. -
JUDGE DECIDES WHAT CHEEP,
CHEEP" MEANS. “
New York, July 8th. A solemn court ruling at Sacramento, California, has decided that there is a common Janguage. between chickens which enables a hen to determine beyond doubt whether certain chickens belong to her or are the offspring of an incubator. Judge Shelley so decided in hearing a suit brought by Mrs. P. C. Newman against Cecil Fernandez..
Mrs. Newman "asserted that a dozen chicks found in Fernandez yard belonged to her, stating that when the mother hea was placed in Fernandez' yard the chicks ran to the maternal bird calling "cheep, cheep," which Mrs. Newman declared was chickenese" for "Hello mamma!" Fernandez contended that his chicks were hatched in an incubator, and as they had nother, he ridiculed the poultry anthorities statements that chickens have infelicence.
The judge, passing judgment. said, "I have come to the conclusion, that the chicks actel with intelligence when they went to their mother, and that the mother her acted in like manner when she took them into her care; I and Fernandez guilty. Sentence was suspended.-Daily Express
