Mr. Anderson has been Chairman of the Association since 1914. In the ordin ary way according to the rules he could not have held the office for more than four years; but, having regard to the excep tional circumstances of the times through which we have been passing as a result of the world war, the Committee suspend- cd the rule and retained his services. A warm" tribute was paid by several subse quant speakers to the able manner in has dis which the retiring Chairman charged his duties. I have a very dif cuit man to follow. was Mr. Landale's remark, as he returned thanks for his election as Chairman in succession to Mr. Anderson. He added that he had follow- ed him in the Enst as Chairman of the Municipal Council at Shanghai, and he therefore knew what he was saying on
that subject,
THE PRESIDENCY."
There was a little futter of excitement over the election of the new President of the Association. Mr. Anderson had come to the meeting prepared to move that Sir John Jordan be elected, and indeed he
proposed this solution before anybody else in the room could intervene na soon ax the item in question was renched on the agenda.
He referred to Sir John Jordan's long connection with China as the British Minister at Peking, and also the services has ren-
recognized.

amendment. There was a tense moment while those present wondered who was to be put forward as a rival to Sir John Jordan for the Presidential chair: but, Mr. Dodwell disarmed all criticisas by saying he had consulted Sir John, who agreed that the honour ought to be con- ferred upon Mr. "Anderson,

No doubt the anti-opium people in this country will seize upon this state. ment as to the alleged use of the for- bidden drug and make some sort of capital out of it..
Of greater interest is Mr. Mason's account of the distribution of copies of the Bible printed in the Chinese langu- age. This is being done throughout the country.
A Bible Dictionary of two volumes has run through an edition of 5,000, and this success has led to a project for the publication of an encyclopaedia of religion and ethics, which will, it is said, contain about two million charac ters.
The Society is also engaged in printing translations into Chinese of "The Swiss general literature such Family Robinson," and "Lamb's Tales Mr. Meson states that there is a demand for English classica, not only in the domain of fiction but in philosophy and ethica.
