AIMS OF PSYCHICAL RESEARCH.
་་་་
THE GUIDING THREAD.
The Hon Mrs. Alfred Lyttelton ex- plained the work of the Society for Psychical Research" on July 13th, at a general meeting of the society hold “nd Steinway Hall. Mr. Gerald Balfour.pre- aided.
▪,
"
Mrs. Lyttelton asid that the committee of the Society had been somewhat fore- ibly impressed lately with the ignorance shown by the general public of the so- diety's aims and methods. The bociety suffered, on the one hand, from & great deal of misconception, criticism, Bad ignorint scoffing, and 'on the other from consequent sense of disappointment that the existence of the soul," of messages from the dead, and even a second Advent, were not at once proclaimed. They had welcomed the idea that some one, like herself, who had never taken any share in the administrative side of the work, but had long been interested in the sub- ject, ahould give a simple account of some of the society's past and present efforts and the possible future lines of ita developmest.'
The society had established beyond any question that some of the super- normal phenomena they had started to examine existed. Apparitions involving: gome veridical element had been seen, Both of the living and of the dead. A multitude of cases of telepathig com- musication had been proved, as well sa linumerable Thstances of physical pheno. mens, such as table-turning, levitation, rappings, and messages. The transmis sion of thoughts and ideas otherwise than through the senses had been demon- etrated, and side by side with the won- derful advance of the Inst 20 years in the study of paychology, the careful and patient work of the society had explored the subconscious mind, and discovered power of its trange and unsuspected powers and habits. Nothing, said Mrs. Lyttelton, was really sporadic and not subject to any law. She had come to the conclusion that the main work of the society for the next few years should be the investigation of the obscure funo- tions of the subconscious mind, and among these the most important might well prove to be the action of telo pathy.

The society claimed to be a scientific body working in the same way as any other; but it was the misfortune of the subject with which it dealt to be in- extricably entangled with human terrors. and hopes. PENALTIES FOR WOMEN SMOKERS.
BILL IN U.S. CONGRESS.
A fine of £5 is the proposed punish- ment for women smokers in a Bill intro- duced in the House of Representatives, New York, on June 20th. For subsequent offences a penalty of E23 may be inflicted for each cigarette consumed. If the outrage is committed in a place of public entertainment the proprietor is made liable to the same penalty.
In introducing the measure, Mr. Paul Johnson said he had long objected to women smoking in public, "but the last straw came the previous evening when. walking in Washington he saw a young woman outside a picture theatro remove a cigarette from her escort's mouth and take several puffs.'
6. Smoking w even worse than whisky drinking, added Mr. Johnson. It was a bad thing and was going to contaminate the race.
