"THE DUKE OF NORMANDY,”

KING'S BUSY DAY IN GUERNSEY,

FEUDAL CEREMONIES.

FROM

"'THE TIMES' CORRESPONDENT.]

SPECIAL

ST. PETER PORT, July 11th, The King to-day has had the unusual experience of receiving, with the Queen and Princess Mary, an enthusiastic wel- come accorded to him not so much an the Sovereign of the British Empire as in the capacity of Duke of N Normandy In the address presented to him to-day. emphasis has been laid on the fact

that here, as part of the ancient Duchy of Normandy, we have the oldest dependency of the realm. But whether as King of England or Duke of Normandy nothing could have exceeded the warmth of the greeting which has met, the Royal party: at every point.

نیمه

It was, perhaps, fitting that, on a day on which much of the ancient history and ceremonials of the islands have been re- called, it was from Castle Coroet, that the first greating, the Royal hluta, Bounded, for perched on a rock at the entrance to the harbour, the Castle has played a prominent part in holding the island-for the British Crown. Not the least of its distinctions is that, after a singe lasting for years, it was the last stronghold in the British Isles to submit to the Long Parliament.

The Royal party landed at the Con- naught Slip.. The King wore the uni form of an Admiral of the Fleet, with white trousers and boots. The Queen word a satin dress of hydran- get

blue, and a pink and blue net toque. with roses rpand, and carried a Bik parasol of the same shades. Princess Mary was dressed in white with a white net hat trimmed with blue and a little bunch of pink roses, and she carried & sunshade of light blue embroidered with pink rose-buds.

The King and Queen were met by the Lieutenant-Governor, who represents the Crown: the Bailiff, the highest civil

to

authority: and Chief Magistrate (each accompanied by his wife and daughter); the Government Secretary. His Majesty's Cup Bearer, and a number of other lend- ing military and civil representatives.

The key of Fort George WAR handed the King by the Lieutenant-Governor and number of presentations were made. Bouquets were presented to the Queen by Miss Capper and to Princess Mary by Miss Ozanne The King inspected the guard of honour of the 1st Battalion Royal Irish Regiment and the ex-Service men and women who were formed up along two sides of Albert Dock.

Then came an interesting survival of the old feudal days, four bef-holders in euccession being called by the Greffier of the States of Guernsey to do faith and homage to his Majesty in nccordance with ancient custom.. Each fef-holder was conducted to the Rayal presence, by the Lieutenant-Governor and the Bailif.
