WORLD'S RECORD AIRSHIP,
· TRIAL · FLIGHT WITH 48 PEOPLE PEOPLE ON BOARD.
The R.38, the largest airship in the world, took the air for the Arst time last month Built at the Royal Airship Works, Cardington, Bedlord, for the American Navy shahaa satisfactorily andergoba berairborne and engine, trials in the construction shed. The trial was her first flight, test, and was entirely satisfactory. She left Cardington station at 9.55 p.m., and landed, after six and a half hours fight over the home coun ties, at 4.20 am. Altogether forty-eight persons including the crew, were carried.
R.38 is larger than any German air- ship, ber gas-containing capacity being about 300,000 "cubic feet more than that of the ex-German airship L.71, which was surrendered to Great Britain under the terms of the Peace Treaty, and that of the L.50, which flew, in November, 1917, from Bulgaria to a point near Khartoum and back. She is the first airship of purely British design, and not merely a copy of previous German ships. She was laid down in 1919 as the pioneer of a class which was to comprise four airships, the other three of which were cancelled after the Armistice. The design is considered to be a definite advance in British sir ship practice.
The main dimensions and characteris tica of the vessel are as follows:-

85ft 4in.
Capacity................. 2,700,000.
Total lift under nor-
mal conditions ... 83 tons.

eers and men). 29-30.
The disposable lift; fe, the useful lift- ing power available for petrol and oil, crew, stores, armaments, ballast, etc., as originally designed was 30 tons-approxi mately twice that of the R.33 and R.34" but some reduction of this fgüre kan followed from various additions whick have been made, such as bow mooring: gear, to enable the airship to be moored to a mist. R.38 will carry, when fully equipped for service, about 29 tons of petrol, which is sufficient for a flight at full speed (70 m.p.h.) of 5,000 miles, cr at cruising speed (60 m.p.h.) of 8,800 miles, which is equal to the distance from the British Isles to Japan. In view of the interest which is being taken at the moment in the use of airships for con- mercial purposes, it is worthy of note that an airship of the R.33 class, adapt- ed for transport, will carry forty pas sengers and two tons of freight in a non-stop flight to Egypt in about forty- eight hours.
As a result of the experience gained in the design and construction of R.38, new design has been produced for an improved type of airship with
gad capacity of about 4,000,000 cubio fect, which would be capable of carrying fifty. peatengers and 13) tons of freight on non-stop flight to Egypt in about forty hours.

MANY THOUSANDS LOST. ~REVELATIONS OF OFFICIAL WASTE.
There are some astounding revelations of waste of public money, dae largely to gross negligence and official carelessness, in the report of the Comptroller and Auditor-General on the appropriation account of receipt and expenditure of the Ministry of Munitions for the year ended March 31st, 1820, recently issued.
In 1017, an order for 12,000 magnetos for use in aeroplanes was placed with America. Certain parts had to be sup plied by the Ministry, but the Ministry failed to provide them. Their defence was that the magneto manufactured by another firm was preferable to the type in question. The contract. was cancelled by the award as compensation of £1,150, in addition to the sum of £00,194 paid fct the incomplete structures.
With regard to the purchase of build- ing materials for Government housing! schemes by the Ministry, it is stated that exantination of, the transactions did not furnish satisfactory evidence that the department, although making heavy purchases, was getting more favourable terms than those generally current in the trade and the element of competition appeared to be entirely absent, prices paid being either the current price list terms or the result of negotiations be tween officials of the department and the manufacturers, or in certain cases build- ers' nierebants.
LOST MOTOR LUKRIES. While the War-office had informed the Treasury that on's four vehicles were not accounted for at Kempton Park Motor Depot, examinations of the Minis try lists indicated that a, number of vehicles, were included twice, and pend- ing farther explanation by the Ministry, it appeared that, the number of lorries not accounted for was, about 150.
Payments, of over £4,000,000 had been made in connection, with the sale of Blough depot. It had been decided that tanks with armament removed, were in- cluded in the sale..
A temporary official of the Ministry spid 100 tons of China wood oil for £50 a ton, 500 tons at £58 per ton, sad a A further 150 tons at the same price. departmental committee found that the market. quotation for China, wood oil at the time of the first and second sales was £80 a ton, and at the time of the third sale £00 per ton. It was decided to cancel the balance of 130 tons not deliver- ed, but the purchaser produced evidence. to show that he had already sold for ward delivery 00 tons of the oil The Bum of £6,480 was paid as compensation for the cancellation of the contract, be ing the difference between the contract price of £58 per ton and the market price at the time of cancellation of £180 per ton on 90 tons at of: Of the balance of oil remaining on hand, 90 tons were sold at £10 per bon
