RECORD IN DIVORCA.
AFTERMATH OF WAR
Na farer than 5,763 matrimonial suita were dealt with in the High Court in 1p10, an increase on the total for 1918 of 114 per cent, and on that for 1913 of 855 per cent. These striking Agures, re- corded in the annual Judicial Statistics, afford some measure of the disturbanca: of domestic relations brought about by the war. It is trus that the facilities. now available to poor persons have been an important factor in welling the lists, but there can be little doubt that the increase of cases in this category must also be largely ascribed to was conditions.

A NEW TREATMENT FOR SYPHILIS.
FRENCH EXPERIMENTS.
PARIS, May 31st.
A new method of treating syphilis was introduced at the Academy of Sciences yesterday by Dr. Koux, Director of the Pasteur Institute, who explained series of researches made by Dr. Levaditi and Dr. Severac, also of the Pasteur Institute.
Their treatment consists in the injec tion of bisonthate of potassium and sodium. They experimented on rabbits into which the virus of syphilis had been injected. In the case of three animala the injection of the bismuthate was in- travenous, and on the day after the in jection the spirochetes had disappeared from the blood of the animal. In the case of a fourth-rabbit the injection was subcutaneous, and here the spirocheter disappeared alter four days
The treatment was also applied to the human subject, with the same rapid dis appearance of the spirochaetes and the cure of the primary lesions. Apparently the cure was complete, but it is too soon' yet to claim success for the treatment, as several years must elapse before it is certain that the disease will not re appear.--Times,
LADY":"ASTOR LOSES HIER
WAY.
The House of Commons occupied itself" on May 27th with much talk of maternity and babies. It all arose on the question of the International Labour Conference held at Washington towards the end of 1010 under the League of Nations. Lady Astor, as babies were concerned, plunged into the fray with characteristic verse. She quoted from a speech made by Dr.
Addison, and wished to find the exact. passage
I have it here in Hansard," she said, and feverishly ran through the official report to find what she wanted, but in her agitation it eluded her. Sho ddenly pitched the book on the lap of
1 Robert Cecil, who ant below her, and ejaculated, "Here, you find it, Bob": The Hones grected this breach of conven- tion and procedure with a shriek of Isughter Bob" blushed, and his Ceci lian pride seemed slightly fuffled at this feminina manner of getting out of a dif culty. But he found the passage,
In spite of the. Great War, the spirit, of national hatred, national greed, and the worst. form of national prido ara os dominant as ever.—Mr. Lloyd George.
