ROYAL BASCOT.

BEAUTY AND GAY. DRESSES.

The Royal Ascot Race Meeting was begun on June 14th There were a few |trains-but guly a few-and the very great majority of people made the jouy- ney on to the Royal Heath by motor- car. In these circumstances the attend- ance of the general public" in some of the enclosures was not so great as it has been in recent years, but the Royal En closure, the Paddock, and Tattersall's King were very fall indeed,

Ascot is not, and never will be, Epsom on Derby Day. Ascot is the official race meeting of society, which as such attracts many other people. Epsom is the race of the world. That is the great terace. At Epson we gather together on a great open sunburned heath, where the arrangements for our accommodation are remarkably primitive. They Lavo not been altered for many years, and they probably never will be altered.. Ascot is the Royal Meeting, with fine stands, large lawas, club tents, and a profusion of geraniums, Ladics attend Epsom for the fun of the thing, but they attend Ascot as a very serious part of their lives. Dress does not matter ab Epsom, but it really does matter at Ascot. I said dress-perhaps I ought to have said undress

The scene inside" the gates was 8.5 wonderful as ever-pretty flowers, pretty women, pretty dresses, and ugly "frock | and morning costs and top hats, with here and there an unconventional bowler bat and quite a number of soft felt bats. The grass in the Paddock and on the Lawns was burned and dry, but smelled like cut hay. The far side of the course was covered with Club tents, at which luncheon and, tea, and strawberries and

WILLARD cream, and ices and all kinds of cups

It is to be feared that I am very ignorant on the matter of dress, but a larger number of beautiful women I never saw in any enclosed place, not omitting the great and famous racecourses in and round Paris. There was, it appeared. an absence of marked colours, and the whole scene may have been sombre, but with the sun shining on it all it was really one of great and appealing beauty.

antiquity curiously intermingled. The cheers of the people down the floated to the stands and the enclosures took it up until the head of the proces sion reached Tattersall's Ring, when the outburst of cheering was amazing in its intensity. Book-makers wished the King luck with his horses, and then, later in the afternoon, offered long odds against: bis only runner, Pinafore, in the Queen

Mary Stakes. There is no more loyal crowd than a racing crowd, and they love dearly this State progresa.

At the end of the Royal Enclosure the Royal Procession turned into the road- way leading to the back of the Royal Stand, where the Eing and the Royal Family were officially received. It was strange that his Majesty was received. in respectful silence by those in the most. important enclosure of all, and also by those who lined the short read which leads to the back of the stands. The Prince of Wales and Princess Mary were in the first carriage with the King" and Queen, the Duke of York and Prince Henry were in the second carriage.

UBUZ

The racing was always interesting from the first race, in which Leighton, the favourite for this year's Derby, whe beaten by Plymstock, whose owner, Lord Astor so nearly won this year's Derby with Craig-an-Eran, down to the Inst race of the day, in which Braishfield beat Abbot's Trace, for a time favourite for to-day's great race-the Royal Hunt Cup. There were the usual parades in the Paddock after each race, the criticisms of other people's clothes, the usual queries as to what would win, and the usual laments as to why so-and-so had not been backed-after he had won. It was all the same as last year and the year before that, and it will be the same next year and the year after that. And, at the same time, it was all very enjoy able and yery pretty-something quite different from anything else in the world. There is only one thing and about Ascot.. It marks the highest point of the Lon- don season, and after that comes the decline.

DEES8. AT THE rates. „

The King wore a silk hat with a dark grey frock coat in which a white carna tion was fastened, a light grey, waistcoat and tie of the Royal racing colours. A white carnation was also "the buttonhole worn by the Prince of Wales," the Duke of York and Prince Henry, all of whom wore black braided morning coals. The Queen arrived in a begonia-niok velvet. cloak embroidered with cut steel; her swathed toque was of shot gold brocade, and her draped gown of magull-grey silk laco over satin of the same colour was

belted with jade-pred rapphire carrings welvet. Her orna- ments were pack lace with a sapphire and a pearl pendant. Princess Mary wore a picture hat of pale blue organdi trimmed with sky blue ribbon with two pink roses at the side, and edged with a narrow border of lace, and her dress was of em- broidered white creps de Chine,
