PARIS FASHION „NOTES.
(FROM OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT,'
ASAREL RAMSAY.} »
PARIS, May 30th. The lingerie with which a young bride stocks her glory box or that with which an older one replenishes her de pleted store is chosen now-as are all other things-with one eye on the changed conditions brought about by that ogro of modern times-H.C.L.
lawn is so
Not so very long ago, no Frenchwoman with any pretension to taste and elegance would dream of choosing any other material than the finest "of lawn for the confectioning of her under-wear: or orna menting it with any but the daintiest of hand-embroidery. Now, the cost of so prohibitive that only the women-folk of profiteers can hope to in clude it in their trousseaux and the wages paid to embroiderers have been so augmented that women with the most elegant of tastes are obliged to choose other fabrics and have them trimmed with Ince or some other substitute for hand. embroidery. The high cost of launder ing is another feature which decides against lawn, linen and baptiste.
True, it is still possible to purchase exquisite hand embroidered, lawn gar ments, but, as the price is invariably beyond the possibility of the average woman, she turns her attention, to other more accessible goods. For the moment, de these include lingerie made of crepe Chine and silk for those with long pursES,
veiling and of cotton crepe and cotton for those with short ones" None of these fabrics are as dear as lawn, and they possess the added advantage of being able to be laundered at home if neces anry, thus reducing the total of the weekly laundry bill
For trimming, lace predominates, the Gper varieties such as Valenciennes and Malines being used. Strangely enough, Frenchwomen rarely employ Torchon or Cluny laces on their underwear and Filet still more rarely, this last-named type being used almost exclusively for the decoration of the dainty window blinds that are so admired by women of other countries who visit France. Fine net, wher the extravagance of lace may not be thought of: comes text in favour. Is is added in narrow, bands applied with a close button-hole stitch worked in linen or mercerized thread; if a more fanciful effect is desired the net is applied to a vandycked or battlement edging, or-an extra width is taken and a middle thread rua through on to form a channel through which to run ribbon. Insertions of net are also men. -
With silks and crepe de Chine, which nearly always figure in colours, hand- embroidery is used. but very sparingly and in the form of a motif bore and there or a simple edging; these added decorations are always in a silk of an other colour-generally a rather vivid one to contrast with the delicate shade of the material itself, Pale pink, blue, champagne, grey and mauve are amongst the colours mostly gren, and these are triained with any other colour, from black to cutlet: both these shades being par ticular favourites: Jade and Veronese
used.
Bands greens, also, are extensively of the sumie material of taffetas cut on the cross, and casings treated the same way are other forms of trimming less expensive than embroidery and much fav oured both for this reason and because of the effect of simplicity and elegance producid." The most charming garments may be made with grey crepe de Chine edged with a narrow band of cyclamen pink taffetas, the edge being either plain or. scalloped. Another pretty combina- tion of colours is that of black taffetas Hem- pirding pale champagne silk. stitching and drawn-thread work are other means employed for trimming lingerie without incurring too much ex-
pensav
As to form, the simplest way to describe modern under-wear is to say that there is nofie. A modern chemise is a perfectly straight piece of material drawn in under the arms by means of a ribbon and finish- ed with shoulder straps of ribbon or lace; a night-gown is equally devoid of cut, and finishes in two penks which are caught together on the shoulder by means of ribbon and thus form an armhole; a slip bodice is the same in cut as a chemie but shorter; and a pantalon of the intest pattern may be made by taking a straight width of material pleating it into an elastic band at the top, and join- ing the back and front of the lower edge, together by means of a tab as inch wide and two inches long. Such a model is simplicity ill and, for wear during the hot weather, most confortable, and suitable.
Sleeves are rarely seen in night-gowns, the most one ever adopts bring very short ones that terminate a kimono model. The smartest creation leave the armo bare to the shoulder, where the gown terminates in two peaks caught by ribbon. Where the consideration of laundry charges has not to be taken into account, pleats are used, the tipiest of knife picats, and the effect in very delightful and fresh-looking. A new garment so generally worn as to be by now quite an old one, is the combinaison-jupon
(combination-petti- coat). This has proved to be so practica! as well as becoming that it is rare i
see either a petticoat or a slip-bodice a separate pieces The slip-bodice is cut on the same straight lines as though it were "destined to figure alone, and the petti
coat is the simplest of affairs, cut quite straight and gathered or pleated into a band that holde also the slip-bodice; the length varies according to the length or transparency of the frock with which it is worn and ranges from the knees to just above the ankles. There is also a three- piece garment which consists of a com- binaison-pantalon, that is a pantalon and a slip-bodice joined together, and to this is added a petticoat that is buttoned on to the band joining these two, and which may be added or left off at will.
Boudoir cape are much more worn by Frenchwomen than they umed to be, as they have learned. no doubt, in these servantless days that a dainty little cap to hide the untidynes of one's hair dari ing house-working hours is a most desir able addition to a wardrobe. The result is that lingerie shops are full of the most charming models copied from, or rather suggested by "the quaint and original caps worn by women of the different pro- (Continmed at foot of neat column.)
