He was not get converted to the desic ability of the unpaid deacon with a red tie. He could not at present see that it was good to have innumerable deacons ordained and going about in their ordi- nary attire. There must be no fielding to the temptation to get the ministry on the cheap. in these strenuous times there was the great danger of consider- ing the Sunday duty the only duty which mattered; whereas what in reality. mattered most was what was done on week-days. Whenever he asked for time off his old vicar used to say: We can always spare you on Sunday. (Laugh- ter.) It is on weekday's we cannot spare you."

Were they quite sure that laymen wished to receive the Holy Communion on Sunday from a brother-layman whont they would meet at business in the City on Monday And with the exception of administering the Sacrament there was nothing which it was suggested that the unpaid deacon should do which the lay- render could not now do,

In regard to the ministration of women, he was in terrible disgrace, and many women who used to believe in him no longer did so. (Laughter.) "By all means let women give their addresses from the chancel steps. That was, he be lieved, as far as public opinion in the Church was prepared to go. For women to speak at all was a tremendous change. in Catholic custom, and they could not expect the whole thing to be changed in a few years. It was still his opinion that the great mass of women in Eng- land were opposed to other women haranguing mixed congregations in church. (Hear, "heur.)

The diocese of London had been car ried on on the principle of the indis- solubility of marriage, and they did not marry anyone who had a husband or wife living. This question of the indissolu bility of the marriage the was one of the most difficult questions with which they were faced. A great many people had been puzzled by the action of the bishops. and particularly of the arbishops, in the House of Commons. When the bills re lating to the law of divorce, wêre before the House of Lords the archbishops led the bishops into the lobby against any proposed additions to the grounds for divorce bat what, the archbishops did not oppose was an extension of the grounds for nullity. As soon as the biff was changed, and an extension of the grounds for nullity, was altered to an extension of the grounds for divorce, they opposed the bill. (Hear, hear.) The storm centre was the question of the in-. nocent party, and he was told there was a growing feeling of rebellion against the the principle which had been carried on in the diocese, and that some of the clergy felt that an innocent party should' be allowed to be married in the church. Quite true, there were two sites to the question; but in spite of all he had read he still believed they were right in follow- ing their present policy. There was so much collusion that heaven alone knew who was the innocent party.

He had been asked why he was leaving his own flesh and blood in order to travel for five weeks throughout the country, His reason was that he found the Church almost powerless on the question of drink, and its rescue', ami preventivo work was beyond contempt. He honour ed the Salvation Army, but if the Church had done its work there would be no. need for the Salvation Army. It was. because he felt that on these two ques tions the Church of England was largely asloop that he intended to go through the country.
