WOMAN SAVED BY POLICE.
An extraordinary example of the strong superstition still prevailing in semin parts of lely was given in Naples, on May 4th.
A policeman noticed that an old woman was trying to hide something under her cloak and asked what it was. She refus ed to show him, and when he used force. be discovered that she was carrying, a sheep's head wrapped up in a woman's hair and fast ned 'with' # large nails. The people in the neighbourhood in- mediately shouted that the woman was witch, and the police had great dif ficulty in sheltering her from them. They Rook her to the police station, but so large crowd collected outside that "the Police President called on the people to' appoint a delegate to see the sheep's head destroyed by the police.
The people, however, insisted that this operation should take place in a church, and accordingly a procession, estimated by the Popolo Romano as being 1.000, set out for the church, where, after a cere mony tasting an hour, the policeman was forced to burn the head before the crowd. The people then returned to the police station with the intention of seck- ing the witch, but, fortunately for her, the police had ranuaged to smuggle her awas-Times.
