TOBACCO A SOCIAL POISON.
CENTENARIAN'S OUNCE A DAY, Sir James Cantlio, recently, addressed members of the tobacco-trade on To bacco and Health," at a conference at the Horticultural Hall, Westminister. Sir James describes tobacco as a luxury, and hesitated to call it a physical neces sity. It was none the worse for being luxury. He could not say it had done: people any good physically; but had it done any harm 1 Tobacco is one of the four social poisons," Sir James went FOD, the other thres being tet, coffee, and alcohol, and it was the last of the four, to be introduced." Alcohol was known by the Brat man,and. !! it will on for over and ever, Amen." however, that the juice of the grupe was one thing, and alcohol, as we know to-day, another. Tobacco might cause trouble now and again, but it was not nearly so dangerous as alcobiol. If a person gave up tobacco for three days he would free his body of every particle of nicotine. Taken at the first blush, tobacco was the least harmful of the social poisons, and ten was the most harmful. But there were no campaigns agatus tes-drinking-they might as well try to stop Niagara as that habit.

Going on to condemn cigarette smok ing, Sir James said that when he was a boy it was only the villain of the piece who smoked a cigarette. Cigarette smoking was a habit that came from the East. The French, who were early cigarette smokers, were taught by the. Arabs. Cigarette smoking atains your inside worse than it stains your skin," warned Sir James, and he proceeded to point out the dangers of inhalation, which he said, tended to make the lungs
leathery." Speaking of cheroots, he lamented the scarcity of the real Manilla variety, and said that the aver age, brands seen in London were agly and unsatisfactory. He had heard of a man who smoked an ounce of tobacco every day at his life, and yet lived one hundred years. If that man had smoked an ounce one day and half an ounce the next day he would not have lived so Tong. The smoker tained his heart to a certain amount of nicotine, and he should be very regular in the amount of. tobacco he smoked.
Referring to smoking by women, Sir James pointed out that wontenkind had long been addicted to the habit. He noticed that many girls he had met although they consumed cigarettes, hated the habit, and only indulged be enuse it was. fashionable to do so. Such A sign is that was not encouraging.
