"DEAD" MAN JUMPS FROM COFFIN.

THE FAMOUS

SCENES OF PANIC AT A REQUIEM RUSSIAN LIGHT OPERA &

WARSAW, April 18th.

Grand Guignol plays are outdone by a drama enacted at Viina a few days ago.

An jumate of the local asylum died, and the coffined body was taken into the chapel.. Another lunatic, who had soen the body of his comrade carried away, stole into the chapal, took the body, from the coffin, and put it in the cupboard used to keep the church furniture. This done, ho lay down ju the coffin, covered himsoli with a shroud, and fall asleep.

A few hours later a priest arrived and conducted a requiem service. When it was finished bearers lifted the coffin to take it away for the burial. The motion woke the madman, "who jumped out, struck one of the bearers a blew on the head, and rah away, The bearer col lapsed and died from fright, while the priest and the others filed panic-stricken.

Their cries brought a crowd to the chapel entrano Eventually some of the bravest ventured inside to ascertain what had happened. They found an empty cofin and a dead man on the floor, and unturally

lly put the corpse into the coffin.

FORTY“ YEARS' HUNT OF WORDS.

COLOSSAL TASK NEÄRING ITS ́

CONCLUSION.

It is announced that the "very last " word has been typed for the Oxford Dic tionary, which has been upwards of 40 years in the making.

That word is "zyxt," a fourteenth-cen- tury Kentish dialect equivalent of the modern (thou) seest." The Dictionary carries a mountainous record far further than existing standard books, which end on, say, “zyxomma” (an Indian libel-

alid dragonfly) or "zythum" (an ancient malt beverage. But gaps remain to be

lled.

"We expect that the concluding volume of the Dictionary-the tenth-will

"In addition to the organised collec tion of words unregistered in existing dictionaries, for which a committee was sears ago appointed by the Philological Society big lists have come from many ources far and near. Totals have rang- ed from 1,000 to 10,000.

Not only have there been researches relative to abscure words dating from dim centuries, but newcomers, have to be reckoned with, the imported callo- quialism or the fragment of slang which may have been definitely absorbed into our langagage only the other day.

"Altogether the colossal accumulation is much bigger than was ever expected. Besides, there are upwards of two mil- Fon illustrative quotations; from one contributor' alone came 105,000.”

It was in 1857 that the Philological Society set up its collecting committee, and then plans developed with the ap |pointment, as editor, of Herbert Cole- ridge, who was succeeded in 1881 by Dr. Furnival.

Always expanding, the scheme entered upon a new phase in 1878; and" with the advent of Sir James Murray, its erudite chief editor, until his death in 1916, the output of the dictionary volumes was. definitely launched,

In 1884 the first part was published, and there are sections, volumes and balf volumes, which have all come in steady succession. The editors carrying on the work are Dr. Henry Bradley; Dr. W. A. Craigie, and Mr. C. T. Onions, a highly- skilled staff co-operating.
