OUR WOMEN POLICE. THEIR VALUE AND BRAVERY. The evidence given before the com- mittee appointed to consider the ques tion of women carrying out police duties was published, recently, Forty-eight witnesses were called, including Sir Nevil Macready, Lady Nott-Bawer, and Miss Olga Nethersofe. The report of the committee was issued last year.
General Sir Nevil Macready, in his evidence, said that if he could get the power of arrest he intended putting the whole of the work of looking after pros titutes entirely in the hands of women. They did not want an excitable or a neurotic woman, but one who had the human element very largely developed, and who was not a faddist. In days gane by there were unfortunate occurrences with regard to the voluntary patrols on account of women being employed who took too narrow and strong views on certain points. Sir Nevil did not think marriage ought to constitute a bar to enrolment or retention in the service, In certain cases a married woman" was more suitable. He mentioned that when he started the Metropolitan Women Police he had some interviews with some persons who were anxious that he should take advantage of their services. He added: "I did not do so for a very good reason. On inquiry I heard that the moving spirits were what in days gons by were called militant auffragettes, and a certain number of them had got into trouble in the past-when, militant suffragettes did get into trouble." The ordinary policeman was very conser. vative person, and the starting "of the women police was, not by any means received, with acclamation by the force. They were now very friendly, and were working excellently with the women.
Answering Lord Cottesloe as to the social scales to which Sir Nevil, went for the women, the Intter said they had a certain number. of constables' wivca and a number of 'bus conductresses. They were all thoroughly satisfactory, and they only got rid of about six to ten during a year. Sir Nevil.nid he wanted all classes. "I want to have the woman I can put into an evening dress, with some diamonds or whatever she wears, and send to a place to mix with people, and also I want women at the other end of the scale. Then some nurses are excel- lent. It is very good to have women with pursing experience."
Miss Olga Nethersole, the hon. organi- ser of the People's League of Health, giving evidence, thought women could properly perform police functions. Dur- ing the war there was not sufficient police protection at certain places, such as

Min . Damer-Dawson, giving evid ence as to the origin of women's service in the Police Force, referred to the Zeppelin ruids in Hull, and anid that, although the bombs were falling, the women were out in the streets and b their posts within seven minutes of the call.

A tablespoon- ful each of chopped oats and ground pea nuts and little water are the materials. These are ground and kneaded in a filter cloth, the resulting product, which is obtained in less than five minutes, being "said to resemble the creamiest sample of cow's milk.
